Review – Samsung Soundbar Q800B (HW-Q800B)

ASUS Expert Book B9

This is the Samsung Soundbar Q800B. This is the middle child in Samsung’s soundbar lineup. It comes with a lot of features and we’ll talk about it today and see if it’s worth the price.

Not sure why you’re reading soundbar reviews when you can’t hear anything from the text, so watch our video instead.

As for soundbars, I’ve reviewed a few before, mostly from Sonos. Amazingly, pairing the Sonos Beam Gen 2 with a Sonos Sub or Sub Mini gives you an experience on par with this Samsung Soundbar Q800B.

So, in essence, this soundbar obviously has a soundbar and a subwoofer that in combination provides 5.1.2 channels of sound. There are 5 on the sides, 1 subwoofer, and 2 more speakers that bounce off the ceiling and come out from above.

Aesthetically, this speaker is very minimalist and surprisingly thin. All covered with mesh. This is due to the speakers that cover the front and top of the soundbar.

The subwoofer is a fairly standard cuboid box, surprisingly thin and small. The soundbar also connects wirelessly to the soundbar, so you can actually place the subwoofer directly under your butt if you want. I’ve seen reviews. I will decide on that.

There is also an option to tune the woofers in the soundbar. There are several levels to choose from, so I’ll do a sound comparison later as well.

Samsung also says it’s “the world’s first built-in wireless Dolby Atmos connection for Samsung Smart TVs and soundbars.” It connects over WiFi, so you need a strong connection to use this feature. Only a few Samsung TVs have this feature. Source content that supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X is also required.

Samsung also says the soundbar also features Q-Symphony functionality when paired with a compatible TV like this 55-inch NEO QLED 4K QN95B. This feature is currently listed as “TV + Soundbar” mode. Q-Symphony is a feature that combines both your soundbar and your TV’s speakers to create a sound that envelops you from all directions.

One feature similar to Sonos’ TruePlay is Samsung’s SpaceFit Sound. It basically does the same thing. Optimize audio for space. Because every space is different in size, furniture and its placement, textures and materials. What’s great is that Samsung says this soundbar automatically does his SpaceFit sound calibration. That said, you can’t turn it on or off to hear the difference, but it still sounds great.

As you can hear, the bass levels are actually pretty okay. I admit, it boils down to personal preference. I think that’s good enough, but if you want more bass that’s stronger and literally helps you shake your butt, the Sonos Sub Mini is even better. Please. I don’t like jumping headfirst into the SONOS ecosystem because the lifespan of a product depends on the company. Also, features like SONOS TruePlay still only work on iPhones and certain iPads.

I should also mention that I connected the soundbar to my TV via HDMI so I could use eARC. In other words, it means that you can aggregate TV remote controls. If you have this function, please use it.

Should I buy the Samsung Soundbar Q800B (HW-Q800B)?

Priced at around RM2,500 for this soundbar, I think it’s actually a low price compared to something like the SONOS Beam Gen 2, which is already RM2,999 for the soundbar alone. If you get the Mini, the total price will double or triple respectively when compared to this Samsung Soundbar Q800B.

Of course, they offer different features, so it ultimately depends on which ecosystem is right for you to use.
