Bloomberg: Apple to switch to custom microLED displays in 2024

MicroLED is one of the most promising display technologies today. It promises the benefits of OLED with deep blacks and good contrast, but with better power efficiency, higher luminance output and most importantly, its pixels don’t degrade over time. It’s still rare to see microLED outside of high-end Samsung and LG TVs, but a new report from Bloomberg shows that Apple has designed its own custom microLED display, first used in the Apple Watch, and later on iPhones and LG TVs. We are considering using it in other products.

Apple doesn’t make these displays and relies on the likes of Samsung and LG for the actual panels, but the designs are custom-tailored to Apple’s exact specifications. Although dependent, the design process is performed by Apple, similar to what Apple has done with its mobile and desktop chipsets. Recent rumors expect Apple to move to microLED with his Apple Watch Ultra in 2024, but a new Bloomberg report suggests the move may be delayed until 2025. I’m here.
