The original Dead Space was from a completely different era. In 2008, survival horror was on the decline, Dead Space was a bit of an outlier, and publisher Electronic Arts didn’t seem to appreciate it or know what to do with it.14 years Later, survival horror returned in a big way, and Dead Space’s trademark bone-saw sci-fi couldn’t be more in demand in the genre. A little over a month ago I got The Callisto Protocol, the spiritual (albeit not entirely successful) successor to Dead Space. Now EA is ready to release a complete remake of Dead Space.
The new Dead Space may be a passion project from Montreal-based developer Motive Studio, but can it compete with today’s top-tier horror titles? Please fasten your helmet and seat belt. It’s time to go back to Ishimura.

The new Dead Space is primarily about stories you remember. The player takes on the role of a normal working-class system her engineer, Isaac Clarke, is part of a team sent to investigate when the giant “Planet Cracker” ship USS Ishimura stops sending signals. assume the role of Isaac’s girlfriend Nicole happened to be a medical officer on board the ship, so he takes a special interest in the mission. Upon arrival, we soon discover that most of Ishimura’s people have been transformed into grotesquely mutated, undead “necromorphs” created by Markers, artifacts worshiped by cult-like Unitologists. With Isaac’s crew dropping like flies, Isaac must find a way to survive Ishimura, find Nicole, and hopefully thwart the Unitologist’s dark plans.

Motive won’t be messing with Dead Space’s core plot, but new multi-part side quests will provide more details about what characters like Nicole, Dr. Mercer, and others have been doing in the absence of Isaac. Plus, new logs, environmental details, and Isaac’s own dialogue combine to make the world richer and more alive.
Isaac is well equipped to explore that world, boasting all his classic abilities and some. Combat is again a matter of slashing limbs rather than aiming for headshots, adding plenty of depth by throwing items and enemies with Kinesis and casting slow-motion pockets with his Stasis ability. increase. The new “peeling” system, which graphically shows that the flesh of the unfortunate enemy you’re attacking has been shredded from its bones, is more than just gross (although it’s very gross). If I hit the for a while, it would pop out a limb, but now I can see exactly how much it’s about to break, so I can react and strategize better.

From the ever-reliable Plasma Cutter to the nasty Ripper to the mighty Contact Beam, Dead Space’s collection of weapons is one of the most unique and powerful weapons you’ve ever dreamed of. This time around, most weapons have a new alt-fire mode, most of which are significantly more useful than before. For example, flamethrowers can now throw flaming walls to block enemies, and pulse rifles can unleash powerful shotgun-like blasts. Some fun new options are also hidden, such as the ability to fire Ripper Blades.
Zero-gravity traversal has been completely redone, as combat tweaks and now you can jump from point to point, as well as full 3D control. It certainly feels more modern than the old approach (and keeps pace with Dead Space 2 and 3).

Like the story and combat, the new Dead Space largely sticks to coloring within the lines laid down by the original game when it comes to level design. Dead Space has always had a certain M-rated he Metroid vibe, but now boasts a full Metroidvania-style layout. Trust Locator Beacons mean you don’t get lost as often as in a real Metroid game, but the maps are more interconnected. Meanwhile, the new security lockout system offers a number of intriguing doors, chests, and lockers that can only be accessed when returning to the area later in the game.
Aside from Metroid-esque changes, you’ll see areas that are pretty much the same as in the original game, though their layouts have often been overhauled. New circuit breakers and rot vines add a recurring puzzle element to progression.Playing the new Dead Space feels like returning to a region you haven’t visited in years. All the landmarks are still there, but their placement and interrelationships may not be the way you remember them.
As if layout changes weren’t enough, the new Dead Space creators look to further ward off the veterans with the new “Intensity Director.” The system offers a wide range of kinetic horrors, with Motive promising over 1200 unique events. Sometimes it’s obvious that it’s confusing, but when it actually works, the intensity director delivers some of the scariest moments in the game. Grip it very tightly.

However, Dead Space doesn’t rely too heavily on this procedural approach. Motive also hand-tweaked and polished many of the game’s set pieces and encounters. This is often the best. The first encounter with the hunter is more exciting, the part where you have to protect Nicole in Chapter 7 is less annoying, and the boss battles are improved. That said, I can’t help but wonder if Motive could have practiced “add by subtraction” a bit more and eliminated some bits entirely. Sure, the asteroid shooting section in Chapter 4 is definitely better, but frankly, it could have done without it.
In general, the Dead Space remake still feels a little dated in some ways. It revolves around, but once-masked load times are no longer an issue. More fundamentally, Dead Space doesn’t breathe its terror. Even Resident Evil, which has a reputation for being the action side of the spectrum, occasionally takes its time to focus on building tension or tinkering with different horror genres. We never really give up a steady drum beat or change its level of intensity. I hope you’ve found that diversity and modulation can be valuable tools.

Dead Space can feel like a thing of the past, but it gives Ishimura a new aura of terror through its impressive use of lighting, fog, and reflections. I feel games like this benefit from an improved atmosphere, so I played most of the games in quality mode with ray tracing. It also seemed to maintain a steady 30fps for the most part on the PS5, only causing issues in areas with particularly elaborate effects. In general, the action scenes held up well, even with a lot of necromorphs and carnage on screen. Will Dead Space rival recent survival horror visual showcases like Resident Evil Village, The Last of Us Part I, or even Callisto Protocol? The level of detail isn’t there, and it’s held back a bit by fairly regular visual bugs (thankfully these glitches don’t usually affect gameplay). This is a very nice looking game. It just hasn’t reached its highest tier.
One area where the new Dead Space completely matches or beats its competitors is replayability. The campaign sticks to the core beat of the original, but with the expanded map and new moments, it once took him nearly 15 hours to complete a 10-hour campaign. Throw in a side quest and a much-improved New Game+ with new collectibles, enemies, and alternate endings to unlock, and Dead Space should remain on your recently played list for some time am.
This review is based on the PS5 copy of Dead Space provided by publisher Electronic Arts.

The new Dead Space is a near-successful revival of the survival horror landmark, with atmospheric new visuals and a series of precise updates to combat, level layouts, and the terrifying parts of the game that are sure to surprise and excite veteran engineers. Offers. That said, some game elements still feel a little dated, so Motive Studio had room to push more. Dead Space should satisfy the franchise’s long-suffering fans, but compared to the latest and greatest AAA horror conventions, it’s no more than a cut.
