SMA Smart Storage Battery System
The SMA Smart Storage Battery is a high-voltage lithium battery designed to integrate seamlessly with the Sunny Boy Smart Energy inverter. This modular, stackable battery system allows homeowners to store excess solar energy and use it during peak demand periods or power outages, reducing reliance on the grid and increasing energy independence. Like most stationary lithium batteries, the SMA battery uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, known for its high safety, thermal stability, and long lifespan. The battery modules are relatively wide (610mm) and tall (483mm), considering the capacity is only 3.2kWh per module, meaning they will need a considerable amount of wall space compared to an equivalent rack-mount system. However, they are very narrow at only 215mm (8.5”), meaning they will not protrude or block any access in narrow spaces. Download the SMA Home Storage Battery Datasheet.
Capacity & Sizing – Available in scalable modules from 3.3kWh to 16.4kWh
Voltage & Chemistry – Uses high-voltage lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells
Cycle Life & Warranty – Designed for over 6,000 cycles, with a lifespan of 10+ years and a 10-year warranty.
Backup Power Options
One of the few disappointing features of the SMA Smart Energy system is its low backup power capability, called Backup Secure, which is limited to 1900W. While Backup Secure is limited to basic essential loads, SMA has announced two higher-capacity backup solutions in development, which are described below. Once available, this will provide homeowners with greater resilience during grid outages, ensuring critical loads or even whole-home backup power. However, it is unknown what additional equipment may be required to enable the Backup Select and Backup Home options.
