How an earbud fits has always been a thorny issue for true wireless earbuds.With the first wireless earbuds, Ultimate Ears came up with a novel way to solve that problem once and for all.

These are the buds that mold into your inner ear as a result of Ultimate Ears’ Lightform technology. It’s clever and innovative, but it’s not really all that new. Tsubomi originally launched in the US in 2020, and it took nearly two years for Ultimate Ears Fits to reach people’s heads outside the US.

Was it worth the wait? Here are my thoughts.

Ultimate Ears FITS feature photopolymer gel eartips with LEDs embedded inside that heat and harden the gel to mold the eartips into your inner ear. We aim to create a fit that is uniquely yours and block out outside noise.

The sensation of the eartips warming up is like starting a fire in your ear, but the process is safe and takes just 60 seconds. This is a revolutionary technology that eliminates the concept of swapping different eartips. After all, it should just fit.

I think it would be helpful if the app had an ear fit test before starting the “molding” process. This is the most obvious part of the frequency range affected by unsafe conformance, but I think a more comprehensive conformance test would be better.

Anyway, Ultimate Ears FITS fit like a glove. The discomfort isn’t particularly an issue (I have to admit I can feel its presence every time I wear it), but it doesn’t give the impression of it falling off. I found that there was a little wiggle room to adjust the fit, but that’s probably because I forgot the exact angle I put the earbuds in.

Its passive noise isolation skills are solid, reducing the amount of ambient noise it passes through, but not eliminating it completely. should increase the volume several times. Wearing them around London Bridge muffled most of the noise, but the heavy-duty noise (trucks passing by) was still noticeable.

The default touch controls are located on the pill-shaped earbuds and are easy to learn with a single tap to adjust volume and a double tap to play/pause. The controls can be a little sensitive, and rubbing your finger on the earbuds can unintentionally increase the volume.

That’s all you can control with the options you customize in the app. Track skipping and voice support are available among other options, but the Google Assistant isn’t natively supported, but can be summoned from your phone. is enough.

Colors range from Eclipse (midnight blue), Cloud (grey) and Dawn (lilac). These are people-friendly options, a far cry from the two-tone colors of the Ultimate Ears speaker range. The matching charging case is a clamshell, with the earbuds magnetically attached to the cradle, a Bluetooth pairing button inside, and a USB-C port on the back. Its smooth finish speaks to its overall quality, and the size and depth of the case make it easily fit in your pocket.

No ANC, no transparent mode. Both are features common to the Ultimate Ears FITS asking price. I’m not saying ANC should be included, but the convenience offered by similarly priced rivals like the Beats Fit Pro, Jabra Elite 7 Pro, and LG UT90Q could take away from UE.

In fact, in terms of functionality, UE FITS is fairly lightweight. There is an app that guides the wearer through the molding process, among them the ability to track battery life, the ability to customize the sound (with several presets and a 5-band EQ), and controls (which can be turned off). ), and of course, start updating the firmware.

There is also a way to check fit, but it works more like a questionnaire than a hearing test. If you’re unhappy with the fit, you can get help from a UE expert to determine if you need a different size.

Bluetooth connectivity is version 5.0 and supports SBC, AAC and aptX. I found the wireless connection to be fine in most places, but every time I stepped into a crowded signal area such as Waterloo Station, I would step off the stack and into choppy waters.

Battery life is rated at 8 hours with an additional 20 hours in the charging case (which makes an uneven 28, or 3.5 charges). Streaming an hour-long Spotify playlist to Ultimate Ears FITS at medium volume drained the battery at 18%. If you keep going at this rate, you’ll get 5.5 hours of battery life, less than what Ultimate Ears claims.

Ultimate Ears FITS has voice support in that it’s compatible with Google Assistant and Siri, as well as call quality performance to consider. Excellent, but struggles with a lot of noise.The level of suppression to cancel louder sounds also suppresses my voice. The person on the other end said they didn’t hear what I was saying during these moments.

The Logitech G Fits have another version of FITS, featuring the same design and molded eartip technology. But its primary target audience is gamers, and it can connect to a wide variety of game consoles, PCs, and Macs.

Ultimate Ears FITS’ approach to frequencies is smooth, clear and, for the most part, well-balanced. I don’t think the bass has that much punch or extension, but it’s not that the lows are neglected – they’re tastefully described.

The upper end of the frequencies is relayed in brightness, and the midrange is clearly conveyed, although there are occasional traces of sibilance. It’s probably a symptom of a slightly looser fit, but it’s not always the case, so I doubt that certain genres (rap, hip-hop) or songs will seem a little more sensitive, especially when listening outdoors. I began to doubt that

I think the delivery of Ultimate Ears FITS is consistent. Sound acts like a blanket covering all musical genres and describing them in similar terms. They aren’t particularly dynamic, especially with the UE Signature presets. There aren’t many chords or vocal progressions up and down that make a noticeable impression, whether on a large scale or on a finer level.

Norah Jones’ voice on I Don’t Know Why reaches a consistent level when, in fact, each verse should swing upwards in tone. Nevertheless, the track’s piano has a nice brightness, crisp detail and clarity, but its lack of dynamism also means a lack of excitement. not necessarily.

The Loudness EQ setting grabs the song, makes its sense of dynamism more pronounced, and widens the soundstage a few notches. With Erick Sermon’s Music (feat. Marvin Gaye), the soundstage is wide, the bass is decent if not the most overpowering, and Sermon’s lyrics are perfectly clear. But while everything feels great and well-explained, its steady, stately pace doesn’t draw any exciting energy from the base.

So does Simple Minds Don’t You (Forget About Me). Crisp and detailed, with sharp, punchy percussive hits and pleasing detail and clarity. But the earbuds have a solid, rather workmanlike performance. More energy and drive will help lift the tunes out of the well-meaning but safe realm where the Ultimate Ears FITS are located.
