Sony announced the ZV-E1 vlogging camera today. This new model sits at the top of the company’s ZV line and is the first to feature a full-frame sensor.

The ZV-E1 has the same 12MP full-frame sensor as the A7S III and FX3. This is a very high quality sensor with excellent low light performance and over 15 stops of dynamic range. Combining this with the same BIONZ XR image processor in his two other cameras ensures nearly identical image quality.
The ZV-E1 makes some concessions compared to the A7S III and FX3. It currently hits 4K 60fps at 4:2:2 and 10-bit, with 4K 120fps promised as part of a future update. It also lacks the comprehensive thermal management of the other two cameras, with a single SD card slot and a mini HDMI port.

As an entry-level, vlog-focused camera, the ZV-E1 has several advantages. It’s small and light, has a dedicated zoom ring around the shutter, and has controls that let you easily adjust depth of field and focus. There’s also the new Cinemascope aspect ratio, which puts black bars around the 16:9 frame, making him a 21:9 image without the need for editing.
The ZV-E1 also features Sony’s latest software features. AI Human Recognition enables features such as multiple facial recognition that adjusts the aperture to focus on the two of her, and Auto His Framing where the camera crops the image to keep the subject in the frame. Moving around, framing stabilizer, automatic mic directivity for detecting moving subjects.
A7R V’s improved real-time recognition AF can detect humans, animals, birds, insects, cars/trains, planes, etc. Breathing correction maintains field of view while focusing on breathy lenses.

The ZV-E1 also includes Sony’s new Dynamic Active Mode stabilization feature.
At $2199 for the body alone, or $2499 with a 28-60mm F4.5-5.6 zoom lens, the ZV-E1 is significantly cheaper than the A7S III and FX3, yet offers roughly the same level of performance and features and added some more features. Unique new features make it a better alternative for new creators.
