Almost everyone I know has a subscription of some sort, whether it’s Netflix, PlayStation+, or Xbox Game Pass. The list is endless. They all aim to provide ease of use for everyone and provide services that help them discover new things.
How about high-tech gadgets?
gadget discovery club is a service that allows you to receive 4 Mystery Tech Boxes throughout the year for a set quarterly or annual fee. With promises of 1-4 gadgets in each box and a retail price of over £100, that sounds like a no-brainer, doesn’t it?
get go
When you first set up your plan, you’re asked how tech-savvy you are and given three choices, ranging from “not very” to “gadget nerd”, before choosing your payment options. am. Sit back and wait for the courier to knock on your door!
When the mysterious black box of my tech showed up, I had high hopes for what would emerge. It felt like my birthday, but I don’t know what it was.
What’s in the box?
When I opened the box, I was greeted by four gadget items. There was a wireless charging pad, a small speaker, a compact key holder, and a finger grip for your phone. My initial thoughts were a little disappointing, but that’s because I didn’t initially know the price of this kind of technology.
NativeHQ Wireless Charger:

Selling for £44.99 on the NativeHQ website, the 10W wireless charger felt quite heavy, being 5mm thick and finished with a tight mesh top for a premium look. Many phones now support 15W for fast charging, but I found 10W of NativeHQ to be enough for an overnight charge on my bedside table. The unit comes with a USB C to A cable that easily plugs into a USB wall socket.
RISE miniBOOM Wireless Speaker:

Priced at £39.99 on the Rise Traveler website, this is indeed a very powerful and small Bluetooth portable speaker. With 3W output, it has a punchy sound emanating from a tiny black aluminum orb just a few inches in diameter. The speaker has a built-in mic for calls and his 300mAh battery that offers up to 4 hours of life. I noted that if you get a second miniBOOM speaker, you can create stereo sound.
Key smart compact key holder:

With a suggested retail price of £19.95 on Key Smart’s website, this slim device is unlike anything I’ve seen before and certainly intrigued me. The super simple design allows you to store up to 8 Yale style keys in one place by removing 2 screws, placing 4 keys on each end and then putting the key ring back on. You’ve effectively created a Swiss Army Knife style device. Simple but made me laugh!
MOMO STiCK Finger Grip:

We found it on Amazon for £12.90, but the official Korean retailer didn’t list the price on their website. The Finger Grip is a slim oval plate that sticks to the back of your phone. It has a sliding strap so you can put your fingers inside for a secure grip. The principle is all good, but sadly it didn’t work for my Samsung S21 Ultra. I found that I couldn’t move the finger grips to the desired location. When I put it down in an attempt to make up for the problem, I found that it worked for me despite its promises not to block wireless charging. I gave my family a finger grip.
final thoughts
Based on the price of each device I’ve found, my box of gadgets is just over £115 if purchased new. Not bad considering this can cost £63 or £69, depending on your plan. At first glance, the cost performance seems to be very good.
Digging a little deeper, however, reveals a slightly darker world.I have found that some official product websites actually share the same company address details gadget discovery clubThis immediately made me question whether the RRP price was believable. You’ll find that same wireless speaker is a few pounds. I couldn’t help but feel cheated by the whole setup.
of gadget discovery clubat face value, seems like a fun and exciting way to explore new technology. Based on affiliation with the official retailer’s website, it should probably be avoided.
Based on these work ethics, we are unfortunately unable to award the Thumb Culture Award on this occasion.
