Apple today released iOS and iPadOS 16.3, macOS Ventura 13.2 and watchOS 9.3. The update is primarily focused on bug fixes and internal improvements, but there is one notable addition. Apple ID now supports hardware security keys.
When updating to new software, users can choose to make devices like the YubiKey a mandatory part of the two-factor authentication process for their accounts. Of course, most users are unlikely to take advantage of this, but for some, the extra security is welcome.
Other iOS 16.3 additions include support for upcoming new HomePod models, adjustments to how emergency SOS calls are made, and a new Black History Month wallpaper.
On the Mac side, hardware security key support is now joined by the rollout of Rapid Security Response, a means of delivering critical security updates to Macs without issuing a major software update. watchOS updates are focused around bug fixes.

In honor of Black History Month, this update introduces new Unity wallpapers that celebrate black history and culture, security keys for your Apple ID, and other iPhone enhancements, bug fixes, and security updates.
This update includes the following enhancements and bug fixes:
- New Unity wallpapers celebrate black history and culture in celebration of Black History Month
- Apple ID Security Keys allow users to increase the security of their accounts by requiring a physical security key as part of the two-factor authentication sign-in process on new devices.
- HomePod (2nd Gen) support
- An emergency SOS call requires you to press and hold the side and volume buttons up or down to prevent an inadvertent emergency call.
- Fixed an issue with Freeform where some drawing strokes made with Apple Pencil or fingers would sometimes not show up on shared boards
- Fixed an issue where the wallpaper would appear black on the lock screen
- Fixed an issue where horizontal lines could appear momentarily during startup on iPhone 14 Pro Max
- Fixed an issue where the Home lock screen widget would not accurately display the Home app status
- Addresses an issue where Siri might not properly respond to music requests
- Resolves an issue where Siri requests in CarPlay may not be recognized correctly
