CD Projekt’s troubled RPG Cyberpunk 2077 wins the Labor of Love category at the 2022 Steam Awards (opens in new tab), given to games that “are still getting new content after all these years.” However, in the wake of the victory, it became clear that not everyone felt the right decision had been made.
Steam Awards winners are chosen by vote. This means that the majority of users chose more works than other participants in this category (Dota 2, Project Zomboid, No Man’s Sky, Deep Rock Galactic). But in a way, Steam’s user review system means that the Steam Awards are never really over. And sure enough, following Labor of Love’s triumph, many new negative user reviews were posted on Steam. Many have expressed what they feel is the popularity of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. (opens in new tab) It will show up on Netflix, not the game itself.
- “A labor of love on my ass, the game is where it should be released. It just got a labor of love because of the web and stupid anime.”
- “This is a loving win thanks to the show and nothing else. Literally 0 content was added to the game in 2 years compared to the other contenders. The game is still garbage and will continue until the company gets ♥♥♥♥ together.”
- “It’s shocking how a decent animation can fool so many people into thinking the source material is worth pardoning, let alone awarding it as a ‘labour of love’.”
- “Cyberpunk Edgerunners didn’t make this a good game.”

Not review bombing in the classical sense. There’s been a noticeable uptick in negative reviews since the Steam Awards winners were announced (193 total so far), but by all appearances, it’s likely that a handful of fans are unhappy with what’s going on. and for some reason. And many more positive reviews were posted in the same two days. There are 836 cases in total.
In fact, this ratio is not far off from user reviews posted in December 2020. At this time, Cyberpunk 2077 was released first and was at its most dire. Over 63,000 negative reviews. That’s his quarter of 227,000 positive reviews posted around the same time.
Despite its troubled history, Cyberpunk 2077 has only been “officially” review-bombed on Steam once. It happened when thousands of negative user reviews were posted after it was discontinued. Although this is still there.
