Rohit reveals why he withdrew non-striker’s end run out appeal against Shanaka in 1st ODI

India’s pacemaker Mohamed Shammi scored a run-out at the non-striker’s end while Sri Lanka’s captain Dasun Shanaka got off to an early start in the 50th minute.^th But his skipper Rohit Sharma stepped in and dropped the appeal to avoid yet another controversy at the first ODI on Tuesday.

It happened on the fourth ball of Sri Lanka’s solid run chase of 374 in the final over when Shanaka trailed by two. Shanaka backed up Kasun Rajitha too far and Shami pushed him off the non-striker end.

But Rohit came along and dropped the appeal after a short conversation with Shami. This happened even after the referee asked for a TV referee review.

Mr Rohit explained the decision to withdraw the appeal: He (Shanaka) was hitting with his 98. His batting was great. You can’t take him out like that. We wanted to get him out because we were going to get him out. But that wasn’t what we thought. Hats off to him. He played really well.

Shanaka thanked Rohit for his gesture at the end of the match.

Rajtha was able to take a single and Shanaka took a strike on the next ball to complete the century on the boundary. His 108* of his 88 balls were wasted as Sri Lanka lost by 67 runs with his 306/8.

Since last October, when the ICC revised its rulebook, run-outs at bowlers’ ends are no longer considered ‘unfair play’.

However, there has been a great deal of controversy over the method of dismissal since Deepti Sharma ran out Charlotte Dean in the third ODI between Indian and British women.
