The 5th generation Range Rover debuted as a 2022 model of Land Rover’s luxury car. It has a new look, improved on-road driving feel and a more British flair. In typical Rover fashion, new models debut alongside older models, making things more confusing.
at a glance
- Three powertrain options, including a plug-in hybrid
- As with the interior, the new design language is well done
- not attractive enough to drive
- The shocking price is the average price for a luxury model today
The 2022 Range Rover has superseded the 4th generation model almost halfway through the year. The 2023 model year has changed a few feature options, but is essentially the same as the new generation Rover from 2022. The new Range Rover includes a standard Short Wheelbase (SWB) model and a Long Wheel It comes in two sizes, including a base (LWB) model..we drove the latter. Two powertrains are available for the 2022 model year, adding his third plug-in hybrid option for 2023.
Powertrains include Land Rover’s legendary 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo and a sleek and powerful turbocharged 4.4-liter V8. These produce 395 and 523 hp (294.5 kW and 390 kW) respectively. A new PHEV option is the Turbo 6 with an additional battery and motor, boosting power to 434 hp (324 kW) and delivering 48 miles (77 km) of electric-only range. All three power units are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with Rover’s unique all-wheel drive system as standard.

Its AWD system is sort of the middle ground between what Americans think of four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive setups. The Rover system has his two-speed transfer his case, which is common in traditional his 4WD systems, but without the driver directly controlling the case like other his 4X4 manufacturers. Instead, the transfer case is computer controlled and operates based on terrain selection choices. The system combines bevel gears and multi-plate clutches to engage or disengage the axles and a limited-slip differential to individually engage the wheels.
This system is the cornerstone of the reputation Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles have received for their all-terrain capabilities since they left the Jeep-based background.
Range Rover’s new design language for 2023 is similar to that of the previous generation, with an emphasis on understatement. But there’s no denying the Rover’s massive mass, and its square-body base can’t be easily disguised.

Rover’s signature marks are present, such as the clamshell hood, the side ‘exhaust’ stripes behind the front fenders (now highlighted) and the wheels pushed into the corners for maximum maneuverability. This classy look is part of Land Rover’s Range Rover line.
The previous generation of Range Rover was a good road fan, comfortable for daily driving, with comfort and feel over long distances. This new generation takes it even further, further improving road feel by nearly eliminating most bumps. This frees up the driver somewhat, but makes the ride smoother and quieter in the cabin. Even the long-wheelbase model with the third row is quite good in this regard.
The downside, however, is that this added cushioning makes for less engagement when manipulating and a heavier feel. Of course the Range Rover has never really been a sports car by default, but body roll and wide-feeling turns are uncomfortable in any vehicle and are exaggerated in this new model… modern air suspension System notwithstanding. We speculate that plug-in hybrid models can reduce this somewhat thanks to the lower center of gravity due to battery placement.

Inside, the 2023 Range Rover has the type of luxury that has come to be expected of British royalty. The screen is clear, including large driver information and instrument cluster setup. Controls are generally where you would expect them to be (on a Rover) and even the steering wheel controls that look complicated are easy to understand and operate.
However, the infotainment is the Range Rover’s stumbling block, as it’s adorned with overly complicated menus and an often obscure voice-activated system. Luckily, with wireless his Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the problem is solved.

Good fuel economy for a large SUV. The EPA rates a total of 21 mpg (11.2 l/100 km), but actual testing of the heavier LWB models averaged 19.5 (12 l/100 km) on a 42 mile (68 km) highway loop. km) was returned. The mighty rover is rated to tow up to 7,716 lbs (3,500 kg), making it a formidable option at that point.
The 2023 Land Rover Range Rover is the premier option for luxury sport utility. It’s both a social ladder and a means of personal achievement, but it meets all those expectations with sheer comfort and powerful features. And it’s surprisingly good.
Also surprisingly, its price is not high compared to its competitors. Prices are below his six figures, but a 2023 Range Rover will make him a $100,000-plus car for most buyers. Our first edition LWB model sold for over $165,000 including shipping. But given alternatives from Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac, and others, it’s within a common ballpark.
