Back in 2020, we reported on the ANNA Stay, a stunning cabin with walls that slide out to offer a semi-outdoor lifestyle. Creator Caspar Schols has revisited the project for ANNA Stay 2.0. It features the same underlying design, but adds some welcome tweaks, such as a recessed bathtub and a packaway bed.
ANNA Stay 2.0 works as a standard cabin. Alternatively, the owner can manually slide the wooden wall open to the elements. Alternatively, it can slide open but can be protected from the elements with a glass roof and walls, or provide a glazed enclosure on one side like a greenhouse.
“During winter, ANNA’s insulated wooden shell keeps the interior warm, like a thick winter coat,” explains designer Caspar Schols. “In spring or autumn [fall], the glass keeps the rain outside and welcomes the sun inside to warm the space. If it gets too hot, guests can slide the wooden tiers closed to keep the interior cool, or slide the glass tiers open to let in a cool breeze.
Maximum length is 13 m (42 ft) depending on configuration. Much of the floor space inside is taken up by a large open room ideal for exercise and entertaining visitors. The downstairs bed is stowed under the floor and can be lifted up for sacking. The bathtub is also under the floor and accessed through a hatch. Elsewhere, there is a kitchenette, a standard bathroom with shower, basin and toilet, and a wood-burning stove for heating. ANNA Stay 2.0 also has a small home mezzanine loft sleeping area accessed by a ladder.

ANNA Stay 2.0 is constructed from a mixture of engineered wood, birch plywood and aluminum with lots of glazing. The walls can be opened and closed manually on rails and have locks. It also features a new integrated braking system inspired by Dutch bicycles. An obvious concern is leaks and drafts, but the designers say this is being addressed.
“To ensure a low transportation footprint, ANNA has designed 80% of its own parts to be locally produced in the future on CNC machines and 3D printers via digital files (mounting materials are printed on recycled) plastic) anywhere in the world,” added Schols. “In addition, rubber and aluminum extrusion techniques were used, resulting in 26 uniquely designed extrusion profiles that ensure that ANNA always slides perfectly and remains waterproof and windtight. .The most innovative part is the patented aluminum rail with integrated wind labyrinth.Because the material expands differently in different climates and conditions, one of the major challenges achieved is to reduce the was to achieve the tolerance of [0.03 inch] on moving parts. ”

ANNA Stay 2.0 works with grid-based connections as standard, although off-grid options are currently available in the Netherlands. No pricing has been announced yet, but pricing is expected to be revealed later this month.
The project recently won the World Hotel Building of the Year award at the 2022 World Architecture Festival. Additionally, Schols plans to create a business-focused model in 2024 he will call ANNA Meet.
