Big changes are coming to electronics retailer Best Buy’s membership and customer loyalty programs as the company aims to generate more revenue and compete with Amazon, Best Buy told customers this week. announced by e-mail.
First, good news. Members of Best Buy’s My Best Buy program receive free shipping on orders from the company’s online store. There is no minimum purchase price at this time.
But that’s good news. On the downside, anyone who paid for a premium Totaltech service like (sort of) Amazon Prime will find that one of the program’s previously promised benefits, free same-day delivery, has been discontinued. It can be frustrating to know. Instead, Totaltech members get free shipping within her two days.
This is not the only downgrade. Best Buy’s rewards system, where customers earn points from their purchases, will be exclusive to My Best Buy credit card holders. Previously available for Totaltech and My Best Buy members. Now neither is available without a credit card.
Other Totaltech benefits such as 24/7 technical support, extended returns, special pricing, and exclusive access to hard-to-find items like PlayStation 5 consoles will still be available.
Totaltech’s changes will go into effect on February 14th. Customers who don’t have or need the company’s credit card will be provided with “a certificate of the points he has left in his account within 60 days of the February 14th program change.” Our new free shipping offer for My Best Buy members goes into effect immediately.
Overall, free shipping is a welcome new benefit for free members, but Totaltech members paying $199.99 a year may be frustrated by the removal of same-day shipping benefits. Few customers would be thrilled that Best Buy is selling credit cards instead of the rewards system they used to access.
