Soundboxes — hardware used by merchants that make a sound whenever a mobile payment is made — have taken off in India. There, POS activity gets busy, and voice alerts from the soundbox help alert multitasking shopkeepers and assistants to ongoing transactions. Now, Google is on the move to keep moving forward to build its own payments business in the world’s second largest internet market.
The internet giant, currently one of India’s mobile transaction leaders with Google Pay, is piloting its own soundbox in the country to alert sellers of UPI payment confirmations. Payments and transfers between banks, between two mobile his users, or between a customer and a merchant. With UPI payments, providers generally do not receive any discounts on UPI transactions. As such, Soundbox has emerged not only as a convenience for merchants, but also as a monetization tool for payment providers.
Sources say Google has started distributing white-labeled speakers branded Soundpod on Google Pay in several markets in North India, including New Delhi, initially working with a limited group of shopkeepers to sell them. Google’s soundbox has a QR code on the front. This is linked to the business owner’s bank-registered phone number and can be used for UPI-based payments. These Soundpods are built by Amazon-backed ToneTag, TechCrunch learned.
The hardware has a built-in speaker that announces payment confirmations in a variety of languages. Like competitors’ soundboxes, Google’s device also has a small LCD panel that displays the amount paid, battery and network status, and manual controls. Attached to the soundbox is the merchant’s girlfriend’s QR code linked to a Google Pay for business account. Users can use UPI-based apps to make payments by scanning codes. These sound boxes usually don’t support NFC payment. This is because tap and pay is not a common method of transacting in India. Additionally, many low-end smartphones do not have integrated NFC hardware.
People familiar with the matter told TechCrunch that Google is distributing speakers to selected merchants at no additional cost. We give you a few days time frame to receive and set up.
Google’s move to this hardware has been somewhat delayed.
The search giant has been struggling with it for some time in India’s crowded payment environment. While the soundbox may sound novel to people outside India, it’s quickly becoming table stakes in the mobile payment game domestically. Google Pay is in direct competition with Paytm, Walmart-owned PhonePe and Tiger Global-backed BharatPe. All of these have already launched their own branded soundboxes that support multiple languages.
Google’s lack of presence at the forefront of soundboxes means it has struggled to build fast enough to keep up with its competitors, and arguably responds to consumer demands in a timely manner. It tells us that we had a hard time.
Roadside vendors, small merchants, and hawkers now use payment soundboxes to voice confirm customer payments. Also, the Google Pay for Business app already has a voice notification feature, and Google also allows businesses to add agent numbers so agents can receive confirmations over the phone. These features may not be useful in stores with multiple attendants, in noisy environments, or where cashiers do not use smartphones or tablets to facilitate transactions. Devices that loudly “announce” payments can help in this scenario.
Soundboxes also serve other purposes of facilitating merchant transactions faster. It supports a wide variety of languages, which is usually important for a multilingual country like India, and offers several days of battery life and a quick overview of daily transactions.
A Google spokesperson declined to comment on the matter, but told Sharath Bulusu, Google’s Director of Product Management for Google Pay, that the development took place on the sidelines of Google India’s event in December. When asked about it, he did not deny the effort and replied: That the company piloted “all sorts of things.”
“If the person doesn’t have a smartphone and runs a small business, the chances are [are] “They will actually pay for speaker products,” he said. It’s not the way to solve it.
“But do you want a solution for that user? Yes,” he added.
Fintech startups receive a low upfront fee and monthly rental fees from merchants using the Soundbox solution. However, we also offer devices for free to many sellers to have them on board. The average monthly rental fee for Paytm is $1.53 (INR 125) while PhonePe is $0.60 (INR 49) per month. Fees are based on merchant size and promotional schemes offered by agents.
According to data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI’s umbrella organization, UPI transactions increased significantly, reaching 7.82 billion in December, worth $157 billion. This represents an almost 100% increase in transaction volume and a 55% increase in transaction value compared to December 2021. However, despite this growth, companies facilitating UPI payments do not require payments from merchants and therefore do not have a direct means of monetizing these transactions. Merchant discount rate or small transaction fee.
Fintech companies are advocating introducing transaction fees to change this model. Last week, the government announced that he would spend $320 million to facilitate his UPI transactions and her own RuPay card. However, businesses still do not have a direct means of generating revenue from UPI transactions.
As UPI is a fee-free payment network so far, fintech companies in this market with compatible apps will have to rely on other sources of income, such as loans and speaker rentals. In 2021, Google Pay will start monetizing the service through user data, almost three and a half years after launching the service in India.
Paytm was the first race to introduce a soundbox in 2020. Its pioneering status has so far dominated. Paytm is currently the leader in the soundbox category, with the company claiming to have distributed over 5.8 million of his. devices to date. Earlier this month, the Indian payments company claimed to have distributed 1 million soundboxes each in the last two quarters.
Paytm said last September that its Soundbox devices will have processed 5 billion transactions in fiscal 2022. Soundbox accounts for his 38% of the company’s net payment income, according to a brokerage CSLA memo issued last November.
Walmart-owned PhonePe and BharatPe both launched soundboxes last year. Last November, PhonePe announced it had deployed 1 million payment speakers across the country.
In addition to soundboxes, companies such as Google and Paytm offer companies QR code stickers and banners for easy UPI payments. However, the UPI market has been highly competitive. This is because companies aim to reach the masses with small transactions without direct revenue generation. This is because a large user base may later turn into customers for other products and services.
According to India’s National Payments Corporation, PhonePe and Google Pay account for nearly 85% of the total UPI market in terms of transactions and own over 81% of the total UPI transaction volume. By setting a threshold of 30% of total monthly UPI transactions, the government planned to limit market dominance and give other participants the opportunity to gain a share. However, this rule was recently postponed until 2025.
Many merchants understand the sound box’s capabilities and are eager to hire it, but when companies start charging rental fees, some choose to return it. , also indicates whether the provider has clearly communicated to the customer how the charges will be billed.
A pharmacy shopkeeper who used Paytm soundbox until last month said, “I don’t want to use it anymore because I found that the device was charging me more than 100 rupees a month just to give payment updates.” rice field.
Companies, including PhonePe, have started charging cancellation fees in response to this action.
