The University of Michigan has announced that it has fired co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss, who is under investigation by the University Police Department for “reporting computer access crimes” at the school’s football facility.
In a statement, athletic director Walde Manuel said the dismissal was made “after a review of university policy.” The statement added that the school would not comment further.
Weiss spent one season at the University of Michigan and two seasons as co-coordinator across the school, both finishing in the College Football Playoffs. He has shared play-calling roles on the offense this season.
Weiss’ dismissal is expected to be “for cause”, and his contract has clauses that include “for cause” dismissal for both felony convictions, as well as a moral conduct clause.
An official in Michigan told ESPN on Tuesday that Weiss was given the leave of absence. No charges have been filed in this case.
Weiss, 39, acknowledged the “ongoing investigation” in a statement to ESPN on Tuesday and said he was “cooperating fully” with investigators.
“Proud of our success over the past two seasons and thank all of Michigan’s players, coaches and staff, the possibilities are endless for Team 144,” Weiss tweeted Friday.
“I salute the University of Michigan and the people who make it such a great place. I’m looking forward to putting this issue aside and focusing on the game I love.”
Weiss’ dismissal means Michigan needs a new coach in one of the program’s most important positions. Weiss oversaw the rapid rise of quarterback JJ McCarthy, who emerged last season as one of his quarterbacks to star in the country.
Weiss is expected to earn $850,000 in base salary and earn $400,000 in bonuses.
