Zaha Hadid Architects was commissioned to build a science fiction museum in China. that too The out-of-place and striking overall form of the sci-fi movie itself is conceived as an expanding nebula with a star at its center.
The overall design of the Chengdu Science Fiction Museum is partly inspired by the natural landscape and the need to connect multiple pedestrian routes from the city and nearby metro stations through the surrounding landscape and the museum itself. .
The interior of the building is 59,000 square meters (approximately 635,000 square feet) and is divided into exhibition spaces, conference halls, event areas, galleries and theaters. It also has a service area and a large central atrium.
Zaha Hadid Architects says, “While accommodating its unique site conditions, the program and functional clarity combined make the museum appear to float above the surface of the lake.” The shape radiates out from an internal central point, emulating an expanding nebula cloud with a star at its center, transforming the museum into a “star cloud” and channeling the energy field into many different zones. disperse. Guide your visitors through your portal. It connects our lived experience with our imagination. ”

The museum features significant landscaping made up of local plants and trees. A rainwater collection system will also be installed and connected to the lake, forming an integral part of Chengdu’s wider flood control system.
Skylights and large windows maximize indoor daylight, and natural ventilation is another key factor in keeping indoors at a comfortable temperature while minimizing energy use. Solar panels on the museum’s large roof reduce grid-based power demand. The shape and size of the roof were also calculated to cast shadows on the glazed façade in summer.
The Chengdu Science Fiction Museum is currently under construction and will host the 81st World Science Fiction Convention and the Hugo Awards (a prize honoring the best in science fiction) later this year.
