What you need to know
- Google appears to be developing a “profile” feature for its messaging app.
- An empty menu explores possible options such as profile visibility, sharing, and contact notifications.
- A faint look can be found by searching for “profiles” in Android settings, but this won’t work as Google is likely still working on this feature.
Google’s native Android messaging app may implement another feature that rivals some of its competitors.
A Reddit user posted a quick snapshot of a profile that may appear in Google Messages at some point in the future (via Android Police). The user is an Android[設定]It explains that if you search for “profile” in the menu, you’ll see an option, and when you type it, you’ll see details that show toggleable options such as “profile sharing.”

You’ll also see pretty standard profile visibility options at this early peak, regardless of what kind of profile you’re making. Useful in some group chats. Ideally, setting your profile to ‘Private’ or ‘Contacts Only’ provides more protection than ‘Public’ where anyone can see the information you enter. The user also found two additional options for her, notification when contact details are updated and notification when new contacts are found.
Tapping the toggle doesn’t seem to do anything for now, as it’s likely in a behind-the-scenes development stage before entering the testing phase. But that is not the case for some of our competitors.
Both WhatsApp and Telegram have had user profiles for some time now. It might be a pipe dream to think that Google Messages offers as much freedom as Telegram’s Collectible Usernames. However, it may include more basic things like setting your profile picture along with your chosen name.
In another effort to step up the texting game, Google Messages rolled out end-to-end encryption for group chats for beta testers in December. Since then, testing has been much more extensive for testers to experiment with this more secure method of sending messages to people in social groups.
