The iPhone 15 is expected to get a belated upgrade in the form of Wi-Fi 6E connectivity.
Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis and Tom O’Malley (via MacRumors) have published a research note claiming that this year’s iPhone 15 series will support the latest Wi-Fi standards. It’s not specified if this will be a Pro feature or if it will be the full range.
Wi-Fi 6E is the first product to use an all-new 6GHz frequency in addition to the usual 5GHz and 2.4GHz channels, delivering faster connection speeds, lower latency and greater reliability.
The likes of the Google Pixel 6 and Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra have had access to this new frequency for quite some time, but Apple opted out with the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 families.
In fact, I mentioned the lack of Wi-Fi 6E support in my iPhone 14 Pro review. It’s a pretty minor omission in the rough plan, but it’s something we should have seen on his £1,100 smartphone when it launched in late 2022.
The need for an iPhone 15 with Wi-Fi 6E is especially pressing given that Apple has embraced Wi-Fi 6E in some of its other product ranges. The current iPad Pro series (both 11-inch and 12.9-inch) support the standard, as do his latest MacBook Pros (14-inch and 16-inch) and Mac Mini.
As Wi-Fi 6E routers start to become more affordable (the latest Nest Wifi Pro supports Wi-Fi 6E and costs £189.99 / $199.99), another year of Apple ignoring the standard You cannot.
