We have all been there before. An update to your favorite electronic device has been announced, packed with new features that sound really great. That is until an update finally arrives and is filled with bugs that start ruining your experience.
That’s exactly where I’ve been in the days since I bought the Galaxy Z Fold 4. (opens in new tab) Got One UI 5 (opens in new tab) update.Android phones that were once smooth and near-perfect (opens in new tab) It is currently laggy, stuttering and full of many bugs. Most are just an annoyance, but some are starting to become pretty big problems. In my experience, most Samsung updates are pretty smooth, so what I’ve seen so far is pretty unusual.
Head over to r/GalaxyFold (opens in new tab) Reddit confirms I’m not alone. Multiple Galaxy Z Fold 3 and 4 users have had many of the same issues, but I seem to be experiencing more than most.
I really started noticing it on January 23rd when I decided to ask other colleagues who use Samsung phones, “Has anyone noticed performance issues with One UI 5?” rice field.
It was pretty obvious when the phone stuttered and apparently dropped frames every time I opened the overview window.
Several other users have reported that the app they tried to switch to wasn’t the app they clicked on, one UI was completely showing the wrong app, or they had trouble positioning the carousel properly. I have. In other words, something is stuck in the work.
I’ve never experienced it, but my multitasking experience with One UI 5 wasn’t great in another way. For example, the multitasking “tips” bar at the bottom lets you quickly swipe between apps by sliding left or right. Unfortunately for me this is not working properly at all.
Instead of reliably switching between apps, as was the case with One UI 4, most of the time the rubber band on the screen switches back to the active app. (opens in new tab) here is the responsibility. Specifically, as you can see in the video above, the Home Up module seems to almost completely break multitasking.
Andrew Myrick said that he wasn’t aware of the frame drops I was seeing, but that he’s been having network connectivity issues since the update. I too have noticed that the app doesn’t seem to load as fast as it used to. Especially an app like Discord that needs to load chats stored on a server somewhere.

Additionally, several users have reported that the app crashes when reverted. In fact, I’ve had this happen so often with some apps that my phone is telling them to go into deep sleep until the problem is fixed.

Aside from general performance and stability issues, we’ve also noticed a few UI glitches along these lines. One such example was last night at D&D, where he messed up his taskbar app drawer, removing all but one or two letters from each app’s name. This persisted even after rotating and switching between apps. Thankfully a reboot fixed it, but I’m not sure what caused this particular bug.
And this morning my father called me and I could hardly understand what he was saying. Toggling Wi-Fi off (quickly disabling Wi-Fi calling) seemed to fix the problem, but later in the day, a call from Duke Energy gave the bug another ugly head. I was informed immediately.
Listen to this and hear what I mean.
Well, not so good for devices that should be phones first and smart connected devices second.
Many users on Reddit and Samsung’s Members app have also reported battery life issues with the update. I haven’t seen this on my phone, but it’s definitely happening after my experience here.
Has anyone fixed it so far? Clear the system cache and if that doesn’t work, do a factory reset. Still, several users have stated that these all-inclusive “fixes” don’t work.
For now, I have no choice but to fix the problem until Samsung can fix it. I’ve already tried the “clear system cache” trick, but it doesn’t seem to fix the problem. Frankly, I don’t even want to do a factory reset. Until you get fed up and give it a try, use the official bug reporting tool in the Samsung Members app. (opens in new tab) Make sure all these issues are logged.
