“Twinkle twinkle star, who are you?” sings a dying woman atop the elevator tannoy as I make my way through the decks of the doomed ship Ishimura. I’m not a huge fan of that whole nursery rhyme horror cliché, but it fits in with Dead Space. Or it wasn’t a series about exploring the wonders of space. The abyss we stare at and see nightmares quickly reflected. It’s hard to marvel at the universe when you have a Necromorph blade in your gut.
By the way, Necromorph is a fancy term for zombies. You’ll befriend them in Dead Space as they scare you every few minutes for the next ten hours or so of him. If there’s one thing he’s glad the remake hasn’t changed, it’s the screams of Necromorphs popping out of the vents. Even if this is a remake and not the 4th game, it’s really nice to have Ishimura back.

It’s true that this remake is so frustrating that it feels like a brand new Dead Space. It’s proof that this survival-horror formula is just as strong as when the original launched in 2008. And I think a large part of this remake’s strength lies in the fact that it builds on what already existed, rather than trying to make something. Brand new, like a necromorph stinging you.
dead man walking
Isaac Clarke is an average space engineer who wants to meet his long-estranged girlfriend Nicole. Instead, he finds himself tackling the worst change in human history. Dying Planet Cracker must also contend with the ship’s modified crew as he bounces from crisis to crisis, trying to keep his USG Ishimura on its last legs. to make friends. your only defense? A set of sci-fi power tools that proved to be very effective in dismantling angry aliens.
Dead Space can handle more in 10 hours than most games do in 30, and the remake puts even more focus on its narrative. Isaac actually spoke and enjoyed his quiet, capable, Gordon Freeman-esque character in the original, but this helps make him feel like an active participant in the story. His lines are a bit erroneous towards action heroes, with lines like “I don’t have all the good ideas, so guess what’s left”, but as the crisis continues, he You can get more of a sense that is barely getting his shit together escalates. This is one reason why Isaac loves muttering curses when he stomps necromorphs into oblivion.

After all, even if the remake’s weapons are so good, there are still so many limbs that can be chopped off. Besides being a weakened limb and a strong visual indicator of what to chop up, it’s definitely a good time to blow more bits out of the Necromorph. blasting into the air and watching the fleshless skeletons rise up like chicken carcasses run through one of the industrial blow dryers.
Leviathan’s boss battles just got infinitely more fun with the addition of Dead Space 2 and 3’s Free Floating Zero-G.
Brutalizing the Necromorphs is an iconic part of Dead Space’s cathartic cycle. You scare me and I reverse engineer you out of existence. This is how we deal with fear. Along with good guns, there are also new alternate shooting and upgrade options for weapons. The Pulse Rifle’s weird bullet cyclone has been replaced with a proximity grenade launcher, and the line gun can place a tripwire. It’s nice to be able to get a little more out of some of the .
Most of the high-priced boss fights, such as Chapter 5’s entanglement with the necromorph hunter, are replayed frame-by-frame, but they definitely look much better. With the addition of G, both Leviathan boss fights are infinitely more fun. The second boss fight in particular has been completely redesigned, requiring you to glide around giant blobs and manually command your ADS cannon to blow up weak points.

fighting gravity
Dead Space’s Zero G isn’t just for tackling giant space monsters, though. Another change is the inclusion of new Zero Gravity puzzles. There’s nothing like sitting and floating while trying to solve a complex space engineering problem. Normally I would just grab the junk with Kinesis, but I say “complicated.” I’ve always thought these sequences were a nice respite from fighting necromorphs, made me think about something other than alien mutilation for a moment, and would be a strong addition to the remake. Fixing Comms Array in particular is a really cool puzzle where you can glide through the middle of a large dome, swap parts, reposition and see your creation. There are also some free-to-explore Zero-G sections similar to Dead Space 3’s ship graveyard.
This is just one of many changes that work to enhance the original. Circuit breakers are also a great example. These power switchers have been added to the old section in the form of devil’s trades, allowing you to choose what to turn on or off.Want access to the elevators? Sure, but it costs you either Light or Oxygen. One of my favorite circuit him breakers in hydroponics is purely psychological, turning off “jungle ambience” allows you to hear the entities living in the vents.
Even a small expedition to open a locked room can be a dangerous proposition.
While there used to be little reason to return to the old areas of Ishimura, the remake adds locked security clearance doors and containers, giving you the incentive to fully explore the extra items. As you progress through the story, you’ll gain clearances, so remember these secret stashes, Metroidvania-style, and you’ll have to return when you get your upgrades. New random encounters coupled with visual and auditory cues go a long way toward making previous areas feel a little more occupied. It can be a dangerous proposition.
already dead
Because this Dead Space remake doesn’t change the main story beats or plot of the original, but casts them in a completely new light through side quests, Holographic Logs, new characters, and Isaac. , can also be called narrative. This time I was able to talk. People like Elizabeth, who never interacted directly with her, became full-fledged characters with their own plotlines. Side quests also provide Nicole’s perspective on what was going on inside the Ishimura, giving insight into the cruelty of the main antagonist, Dr. Mercer.
Motivation has done a great job of carefully adding layers to the original story, focusing on existing, undeveloped elements. It fits the game much better, but it’s the execution that really lands, without overdoing or overly big changes. Subsequent playthroughs will also provide additional audio logs and easter eggs, some of which will be revealed from the original ending.
Still, the overall effect is strangely frustrating. It could have applied just as well to Dead Space.I can’t help but feel the same way about the improved sound design and visuals. This remake was built from the ground up using his Frostbite engine and looks and sounds great. All of this mostly makes me want to play a new, non-remade Dead Space game of this production quality in 2023. It is possible that they had the space to push the department further.
But my main complaint is that I wish more attention and effort was put into the sequel. Beyond weapon upgrades, the game may go further in terms of adding replayability to older areas as it doesn’t really require credits or ammo from security clearance stashes past a certain point Side quests also often progress parallel to the main story, so they add a complementary layer but don’t offer much extra playtime.
It took me about 12 hours to complete everything on medium difficulty, but the remake also includes a new game and a more difficult ‘Phantom Enemy’ and 12 hidden marker fragments (opens in new tab) If found, unlocks an alternate ending. It’s a little short, but Dead Space has always delivered an intense, high-octane experience. Most of all, I’m happy that Dead Space is back and that Dead Space is good. Even if this doesn’t lead to new games, we’ll keep limbs crossed for an equally strong second remake of him in the future.
