A monastery brewery near Munich claims to have made the first powdered beer. Just add water to create a foamy, full-bodied flavor. As a result, it can be shipped at 10% of its weight, promising significant savings in transportation.
Klosterbrauerei Neuzelle worked with “technology partners” and used funding from BMWi to create a dextrin-enriched zero-alcohol beer, the first conventionally-brewed powdered product, followed by a “water-soluble of beer powder and granulated.”
We’re testing a small amount of this powder on the market until mid-2023, but we plan to start making alcoholic beer soon and scale it up as long as people want it. We believe there is an opportunity to ditch and compact the process to minimize the use of raw materials, labor and energy.

“The time is ripe to test conventional beer production and logistics in terms of how we treat our environment,” said Helmut Fritsche, a major shareholder of Neuzelle. “Beer is made up of up to 90% water, so billions of liters of water are transported to consumers around the world. We have not yet saved resource usage and production costs.”
“We know that traditional German Pilsner lovers and all craft beer lovers in particular are skeptical of our product at first.Beer business model. The target group is mainly the traditional German end-consumer, who does not necessarily have brewing knowledge, but a global reseller who can make granules suitable for end-consumer applications. I haven’t seen it.”
In fact, breweries will first start targeting these powders in distant markets, such as Asia and Africa, where transportation costs are the highest. Perhaps beer snobs aren’t as much of a problem domestically.
I think many people would like to raise their hand and try it. If they do what they say on a can and offer a great drinking experience without having to move water or bottles, this could be an absolutely disruptive and revolutionary advancement.
