We recently suffered an apocalyptic heartbreak Last of Usnow getting fixes for Survival-Based Horror yellow jacketand here it concludes the holy trinity of misery with a mixture of good old-fashioned psychological trauma and familial horror, Inheritance.
But in addition to sharp thorns and notoriously demonic moments, season four’s first episode was armed with the usual layers of script.
A perfect example of this? The final scene of Logan (Brian Cox) watching his ATN newscast.
‘Succession’ Season 4 Review: Are You Ready to Say Goodbye to the Roy Family?
What happened to the last scene of episode 1?
After losing a bid to purchase the media conglomerate PGM by his own children at the end of Season 4, Episode 1 sees Logan slumped alone on a couch, drunk watching ATN newscasts. network he owns.
Logan, clearly dissatisfied with what he sees, reaches for the phone and dials Sid Peach (Jeanie Berlin), a senior ATN employee. They have the following exchanges:
“Cyd. I just saw noon. It’s bullshit. People watch at night. I watch at night.”
“OK…”
“Who is this bastard anyway? He looks like a ball sack wearing a wig.
“It’s over, Log—”
“Are you missing it?”
Halfway through Sid trying to reassure Logan, he hangs up on her again and the episode ends moments later. But a scene as simple as Logan chastising an employee?
What is the true meaning of the last scene?
Logan randomly lashing out at his staff is nothing new.
However, if he’s stressed, he has a reason to do so. The sale of Waystar Royco is imminent. This means Logan will relinquish power for the first time in his life. To make matters worse, he lost his PGM purchases to his own despised children.
I don’t think Logan is simply moaning at his employees in the scene above. I think he struggles desperately for a sense of control that will soon slip away from him. His phone call is an attempt to use his powers before he loses them. Instead of talking to Sid Peach, he’s talking to himself.
