The next World Expo won’t take place until 2025, but the first architectural designs have already been unveiled. This example was designed by Apropos Architects and takes the form of a top-heavy, spiraling structure that pays homage to the glassmaking traditions of the Czech Republic with its attractive glazed exterior.
Reminiscent of the recent design of Klan TV headquarters, Sculpting Vitality comprises four floors plus a basement and roof terrace area. Its interior measures 1,623 square meters (approximately 17,500 square feet) and hosts theater performances on the ground floor, as well as a bookstore, cafe, and playroom. Further up is the exhibition area and office space, with a bar and second cafe on the roof. The interior is dominated by a large spiral ramp providing access from the bottom up, with stairs set between the walls of the cavity.
The most notable part of this project is the highly intricate exterior, with eye-catching fritted (aka sintered) glass details.
“The façade consists of double or triple glazed insulating glass panels,” explains Apropos Architects. “The outer panes of each panel are artistically treated. This design offers the treatment of the panels using the so-called sintering method, also known as fusing. In addition to the glazing, the building features cross-laminated wood and steel, as well as some concrete foundations. Constructed with split segments for easy assembly, dismantling and transportation. Rainwater is collected, filtered and reused. Architectural drawings also show solar panels installed on the roof to reduce grid-based power demand.
Sculpting Vitality will be completed in early 2025, in preparation for the Japan Expo in Osaka from April 13th to October 13th. After the Expo ends, the building will be used as a museum and exhibition space.
