What you need to know
- Google Photos is getting a new video editor for Chromebooks and ChromeOS devices.
- The upgraded editor, first introduced in July 2022, is now starting to roll out.
- To edit videos on your Chromebook, you’ll need to install the Google Photos app from the Play Store.
After being teased in July 2022, Google is finally rolling out a new movie-making tool on Chromebooks via Google Photos. Until now, this was only possible using various Linux apps or the recently released LumaFusion app.
In an announcement post on the Google Photos community forum, users will be able to “seamlessly use images and videos from their Chromebook and edit them in Google Photos.” Not only does this mean that you can easily add images and videos from your photo library, it also means that you have a wide range of tools at your disposal.

These include the ability to adjust specific images and scenes using the built-in editor. Google allows you to start with a preset or create your home movie from scratch. Selecting a preset brings up a storyboard where you can drag and drop images and videos from your library.
Google Photos makes it easy to find images and videos to include in your movie, “intelligently picking the most meaningful moments from longer videos” in case you need a little help.
The biggest ‘gotcha’ with editing videos on one of the best Chromebooks is that you have to actually install an app from the Play Store. It’s also important to note that this isn’t as feature-rich as other apps such as LumaFusion. However, if you just want to make movies and only care about basic editing tools, this is probably for you.
This Google Photos update is “rolling out” and we hope to make it available to all users in the coming days.

The Lenovo 5i Chromebook may not be as flashy, but with a 16-inch screen and ample performance, this one flies under the radar. Makes video editing more comfortable.
