One of the surprising announcements that accompanied the launch of the Fitbit Sense 2 and Versa 4 was that Google was making both Maps and Wallet available. Previously this was not possible. Google’s influence came only in the form of replacing Alexa with the Google Assistant.
That said, when the latest wearable launched, I couldn’t really use Google Maps on my Fitbit. However, a subsequent update has made it possible, and it’s pretty easy to set everything up.

With the auto start toggle enabled, Google Maps will automatically show directions on your Fitbit. This works just like it does with the Pixel Watch, the best Android smartwatches, and more. Plus, you can always use Google Maps on your Fitbit by simply opening your app drawer and selecting the Maps app.
Too little, too late?
I’m thrilled that the best Fitbits even have Google Maps and Google Wallet, but these wearables are in a bit of an odd position. Fitbit is removing the ability to download and install third-party apps and has no intention of bringing Google Assistant to smartwatches.
Part of this can be attributed to the release and popularity of the Pixel Watch powered by Wear OS. However, since all health and fitness tracking features on Google’s smartwatches are handled by Fitbit, it’s clear that Google is trying to avoid duplication.

still pretty awesome
The Fitbit Sense 2 may not be as appealing as the Pixel Watch, but if you don’t mind downloading apps, this could be the best non-Wear OS smartwatch for Android users.
