TikTok to Comply With US Law, Protect User Data From China

TikTok and its parent company ByteDance will continue to protect U.S. user data from China, confirmed TikTok legal counsel Erich Andersen.

ByteDance is developing technology that “makes it physically impossible for any government, including the Chinese government, to access U.S. user data,” Andersen claimed in an interview with The Associated Press on Friday. bottom.

The attorney also underscored ByteDance’s intention to make Lemon8, a photo and video sharing app released in China in 2020 and currently being tested in the US, similarly secure.

“We obviously do our best with the Lemon8 app to comply with US law and do the right thing here. [have] The application has come a long way — it’s mostly in the startup stage. ”

Andersen’s allegations come nearly a year after TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew first discussed Project Texas, a program aimed at strengthening the company’s data security posture in the United States.

Since then, TikTok has undergone numerous bans on government devices in several countries, and many legislators and governments do not believe the company’s intentions to protect user data from the Chinese government.

Zi Chew also spoke at a congressional hearing last week, confirming that ByteDance will remove all historical US user data from non-Oracle servers by the end of the year.

“We are investing in a system where people don’t have to trust the Chinese government and they don’t have to trust us,” Andersen told The Associated Press, defending Zi Chew’s views. Where are you missing? At some point, beyond cybersecurity risk assessments and such, you come to the conclusion that ‘we don’t like your nationality’.”

TikTok is only banned on government devices in the US, but the ban could extend to other devices, mainly through the so-called RESTRICT Act.
