- According to a new report, one of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 prototypes is 13g lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 4.
- The new hinge design is lighter and thinner, allows the phone to fold flat and is 1mm thinner.
- Samsung’s new hinge bends the glass into a water drop shape and helps eliminate wrinkles from the display.
Samsung is said to be “dieting” its Galaxy Z Fold series ahead of its next iteration, due out later this year. As you can imagine from the term, this means that Samsung’s top brass decided that its engineers needed to create a new model thinner and lighter than his 263g Galaxy Z Fold 4.
As reported by ETNews (opens in new tab)Galaxy Z Fold 5 (opens in new tab) It weighs around 250g, confirming previous reports we saw last month (opens in new tab) The Fold 5 is said to be about 10g lighter than the Fold 4. It is also said to be 1mm thinner thanks to the new hinge design.
Further adding to the previous rumors is information that cites a hinge redesign that causes the infamous display creases on Samsung’s best foldable phones. (opens in new tab)According to reports, this new hinge will be smaller and lighter than last year’s already reduced size hinge, which accounts for most of the weight savings.
Its new hinge design follows in the footsteps of phones like the OPPO Find N2 (opens in new tab)When the smartphone is folded, the ultra-thin glass bends into the shape of a water drop. This allows the phone to fold flat. Samsung’s current foldable device has a small gap in the hinge when closed, giving it a trapezoidal shape. It also eliminates the creases in the display almost completely.
The report doesn’t say the phone is dustproof, but previous reports have pointed out that this will be the first foldable device to be both waterproof and dustproof, and that’s true. If proven, it would be a big win for Samsung. However, the report says the Fold 5 won’t include an S Pen silo because the focus of this model was on reducing size and weight.
