For the first time, researchers have used decades of information about sex to calculate a mathematical model for achieving sexual climax.

Sex is not a topic that is often talked about openly. This has hindered the collection of comprehensive and accurate data on sexual behavior and responses. But researchers at the University of Sussex in the UK have tackled the problem head-on. Inspired by math-based models used to analyze and improve sports performance, researchers have calculated the first-ever mathematical model of how to achieve sexual climax.
The success of mathematical models depends on direct experimental measurements and fairly accurate data. So the researchers built a model based on pioneering work done by Masters and Johnson, combining decades of data on physiological and psychological arousal.
American gynecologist William Masters and sex therapist Virginia Johnson studied the human sexual response and the diagnosis and treatment of sexual and dysfunctional disorders from 1957 to the 1990s. . Between 1957 and 1965, they directly observed 382 college-age females and her 312 college-age males, and estimated about 10,000 sexual acts, the first study of human sexual response. Since the work of Masters and Johnson, the physiology that occurs during the sexual response cycle has been explored using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), which shows which parts of the brain are activated during sexual stimulation and orgasm. Considerable progress has been made in measuring positive responses.
What is clear from both old and new data is that sexual response is a complex process that differs between men and women. In this study, the researchers thought it would be easier to focus on male sexual responses because they are less complex than female sexual responses.
Tracking four stages of the male sexual response cycle (arousal, plateau, orgasm, and resolution) found that too much psychological stimulation early in the cycle made it less likely to reach orgasm. .
From this data, they devised two mathematical formulas to describe their findings.
“In the past, researchers have tried to create models that explain the physiological pathways to climax, but without success,” said Constantin Bruce, co-lead author of the study. “We have developed the first successful mathematical model of sexual performance, taking advantage of well-established data and previously published work on modeling biological phenomena such as epidemiology and immunity.”
