According to Emsisoft, at least 19 US healthcare organizations (HCOs) have been compromised by ransomware gangs so far this year.
Brett Callow, a threat analyst at New Zealand-based anti-malware specialist firm, revealed the news in a tweet yesterday.
For more information on medical accidents, see NextGen Healthcare Data Breach: One Million Patient Records Affected.
Callow argued that According to Emsisoft data, these 19 providers operate 33 hospitals, and at least 16 of the 19 had their data exposed.
By comparison, there were 25 incidents impacting U.S. hospitals last year overall, which seems to point to higher breach rates in 2023. However, by December last year, the total number of hospitals affected was much higher at 290.
This was due to an attack on CommonSpirit Health, which operates about 150 hospitals.
Data breaches occurred in 68% of incidents last year, compared to 84% in the first half of 2023.
Breach continues. Callow recently revealed: twitter Yesterday it was revealed that the Jefferson County Health Center was listed on the Karakurt Group’s leaked sites.
The group claims to have stolen more than 1TB of data, including employee and patient medical records, test results, and personally identifiable information (PII), from Jefferson County Hospital in Wawrika, Oklahoma.
American hospitals aren’t the only ones coming under attack recently. The Black Cat/ALPHV group recently added Barts Health NHS Trust to their leak site, claiming they stole 7TB of massive data.
The trust, which cares for 2.5 million people across east London hospitals including St Bartholomew’s Hospital, Royal London Hospital and Mile End Hospital, is said to be urgently investigating the claims. .
Patient data is also exfiltrating from HCO partners.Breach reported at Manchester University Information security It is believed to have led to the leak of NHS numbers and other information about more than one million patients. The university appears to have collected information from 200 hospitals for a research project.
According to Check Point, the UK healthcare sector saw a 22% year-over-year increase in attempted attacks in Q1 2023, averaging 1684 per week.
