Mars terraforming simulator Per Aspera (opens in new tab) has released a new free DLC called Home to make Mars more livable. The new feature expands the terraforming process on Mars to include deeper and wider areas of flora and larger, habitable open-air cities for the Earth’s population to migrate.
This changes Per Aspera’s goal so that after the game terraforming is considered complete, you can continue playing to develop a more in-depth habitable ecosystem on Mars. There are also new mechanisms such as desertification if Mars gets too hot, and dynamic water levels on water purity.
developer update (opens in new tab) Also included are new buildings such as an atmospheric humidifier and more advanced field farming. It also has a huge metropolis city and an open ocean water plant and pumps to supply the water needs of many humans. You can also immigrate new settlers via space elevators.
Per Aspera is a combination resource management and city building game with players as artificial intelligence (opens in new tab) Responsible for terraforming Mars using drones, large-scale construction, and planned human settlements. There is both a sandbox mode and a narrative mode that tells a well-crafted narrative with branching narratives about the nature of the AI itself.
In my 2020 review, I love Per Aspera and have enjoyed its expansion. “It’s one of the strategy management games I’ve been playing for a long time, and it’s not just its complexity that demands moment-to-moment action. When I’m playing, my fingers are constantly sliding between WASD and the camera. Panned function keys to activate game speed, power, maintenance, drone traffic, and survey results overlays.
The house would therefore be a big reason for me to revisit Per Aspera. It was considered a bold experimental structure for city building or resource management games.
Home is Per Aspera’s second free expansion, following 2021’s Green Mars and the 2022 paid expansion Blue Mars, which focuses on the red world oceans.
Per Aspera and Per Aspera: Home can be found on Steam. (opens in new tab) $30 or $15 off for 1 day or more.
