In the early days of PlayStation, Coolboarders and SSX were staples for many gamers on the platform. They were known for their easy pick-up and play controls with fun arcade gameplay.input shredderan indie title that aims to strike the perfect balance (a pun most definitely intended) between arcade play and realism.

Shredder… drop in!

created by foam puncha joint venture between game development studios I-Illusions When let’s roll (The Snowboard Game 2018), this game is available on PS5, Steam and Xbox Gamepass. Play Here on PS5 (version released December 6, 2022) has been continuously updated and refined since its release on PC in March 2022.

gameplay

While you and your buddy Scotty are making snowboarding videos for your fledgling YouTube channel, meet Lisa, a brand ambassador who loves what you do. She offers you the opportunity to create a sponsored clip and you grab the opportunity with both hands.

As you improve, Lisa will introduce you to real-life snowboarding pros who will offer you challenges while showing off your skills. You can get your reward.

A computer-controlled chatractor is about to land on a steel container in the middle of a jump. A player's total trick score is displayed in the upper right corner of the game's heads-up display. This is 567 points. Bottom right shows the player's current speed, his 42km/h.Top left says his 13m which is the distance between his two characters performing the jump

Tasks have primary and secondary objectives. The primary objective is to advance the story, while the secondary objective is to acquire additional loot to customize your character. includes beating pro scores with the most jumps.

If you fail a trick or challenge, resetting at the start of the jump or starting the challenge over is very quick, so no time is lost waiting for a reload.

Control

Delegating full body movement to the player results in a very intuitive control scheme. Upper body is right stick, lower body is left stick. The physics of it make sense to your brain, so there are no button combos to learn. Just use the sticks to make movements with Border’s body, and you can easily land tricks.

A snowboarder performs a front flip and then a full inverted mid trick in the air. They wear white jackets, mustard pants, black backpacks on their backs, and ride red snowboards. Mid-ground behind the snowboarders are several wooden, multi-story lodge-style buildings. In the distant background are several tall, snow-capped crags shrouded in low lying clouds with the sun shining.

Here is one of my only complaints about this game. As a player with no interest or knowledge of snowboarding (or skateboarding) other than enjoying the game, I can’t relate the names of the tricks to the movements required to pull them off. , I know about backflips, but what about Japan? Have no idea.

To mitigate this issue, it would be nice to add a summary of tricks showing the elements/motions to achieve it. That way, even players with limited knowledge of the sport can learn what the tricks are and continue the fun.

graphics and audio

Visual quality is really good. The snow is powdery and realistic and deforms when shredded. Resetting a mission leaves traces left over from previous trick attempts. The licensed gear is detailed and the environment has some great scenery. They are top notch and the work they have done here is a team credit.

A clever design choice is to remove the in-game character’s face by covering it with a mask to keep you warm. In sports/racing games, people from the uncanny valley come up and distract us all the time. The team makes fun of this in their campaign. A nice touch to show that they care and have a sense of humor.

Dotted in the middle ground and background are green trees. In the background is a valley with a large peak on the left and low clouds passing through the valley. master the trick

The team also nailed the sense of speed when sprinting through treacherous terrain. We want you to experiment with the sound effects of the board on the snow and the wind coming through the DualSense speakers. I think this will improve gameplay.

There are some minor performance issues like texture pop-ins and frame rate stutters, but nothing too bad. Also, the white text on the pure white background of the map is hard to read, so the UI front needs some changes.

longevity

It only took me a few hours to complete half of the campaign missions. This included multiple attempts to bag mission objectives in some cases. On some missions he has a secondary objective required to achieve a 3-star rating, so there’s reason to replay here to keep learning his skills.

"Jamie Anderson takes you on an epic run through a natural park. Below the next section he is divided into two sections - goals on the left and scores on the right. In the purpose section on the left it says: "Primary Goal: Beat Jamie's Score on 1 Jump Secondary Goal: Beat Jamie's Score on 3 Jumps, Beat Jamie's Score on All Jumps" Goals are highlighted in green to indicate they have been achieved.Reading the score section on the left "Score: Current Run - 21346 Last Best 11848"At the bottom of the screen you will see two buttons "retry" left side and "Continue" on the right
If you fail the first time…

It’s similar to the photo mode in other games, but there’s also a replay mode for creating videos of your on-piste adventures. I found it a bit hard to figure out, but after spending some time experimenting, it looks like you can capture some really cool work with dramatic camera angles. The YouTube channel has extensive editor tutorials that you should check out.

Complete 75 missions, jump 26 gaps, collect 54 collections, earn 347 stars and unlock 136 items. Multiplayer also supports cross-platform play, expanding the possibilities of having fun in the snow playground with friends online. Great value at £24.99/€29.99.

Trophy Hunter has 22 Bronze, 9 Silver, 4 Gold and 1 Platinum. I don’t think it’s too much of a burden, with the only grind being “Please give me a discount!” Trophy. This requires unlocking all gear in the game.

final thoughts

It’s easy to forget that this game was made by a small indie team. foam punch They’re not lying when they say, “I’ve never had a snowboarding game that gave me so much control.”

This passionate project of theirs provides a benchmark for how a snowboarding title should feel in the hands of players. Their love for the sport shines through in what they have achieved here. I am really looking forward to seeing what the team has in store for the future.

Great controls and animations with a fun campaign that celebrates the sport and skill of snowboarding shredder landing Thumb Culture Gold Award.
