If you’re looking for a cheap NVMe SSD, you might want to wait until the Acer Predator GM7 series hits the market. List price is less than $0.10/GB, with the 1 TB model reviewed by TweakTown around $90 and the 2 TB model around $160. Thanks to the evolution of NVMe controllers, it sacrifices a bit in its price range, but not as much as you’d expect.
The drive uses TLC, but 2,400MT Flash as opposed to the more common 1,600MT Flash designed by a company called YMTC. The controller is also a mystery, a Maxio 4-channel controller. Marketed as PS5 compatible. This means a minimum read speed of 5,500 MB/s. This is something we haven’t seen in SSDs without DRAM yet.
In our testbed, the TT saw well over that number of sequential reads, achieving over 7,200 MB/s sequential reads and over 6,300 MB/s sequential writes on CrystalDiskMark. In most of our tests, the 1TB Acer Predator GM7 was definitely in the middle of the pack, competing with more expensive cached SSDs. The 5-year warranty and the 600TBW label also guarantee that this drive will last for a while.
