On paper, Forspoken is the game that was supposed to resonate with me. A Luminous Productions/Square Enix venture, I’m a very loyal developer despite a lackluster track record in recent years. There are some things that I absolutely love in life, like nail art, cats, parkour, and matrilineal rulers.
Still, Forspoken is disappointed by her sheer unwillingness to break the mold. In many ways, this is exactly the same type of game we’ve seen countless times over the last 15 years. An open-world RPG with superpowers, mythical creatures, and terrifying end-of-the-world threats. It plays into several otherworldly tropes, in which main character Frey Holland left his New York home and plunged into a fantasy world. and the threatening world of Asia and Blake that consumes everyone within.
A-Frey’d evolve
It’s a pedestrian premise and never goes anywhere particularly exciting. Its twists and turns feel predictable. The game’s story doesn’t necessarily have to include his Bioshock- or Nier: Automata-level clever plot twists, but Forspoken just doesn’t enjoy the premise. However, I enjoyed the second half of the story. The start of the game is rather plagued by some Selection The story beats, including making Frey a petty criminal, squatting in an abandoned apartment and having a nasty run-in with a local gang. If we stop focusing on who New York Frey is and put more emphasis on Asia Frey, it’s a much more enjoyable story.
Despite the terrible trailer (opens in new tab) Forspoken doesn’t have a lot of moments that make you recoil in embarrassment. , it could be my longstanding immunity to Square Enix dialogue like Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy.
It’s made better by the fact that I really enjoyed Frey as a character. Sure she says “fuck” too much, but so do I! I wish I had attended. I thoroughly enjoyed the intimate relationship between her and Kafu, even though the frequency of her and Kafu’s exchanges was high. .

The most fun I had with Forspoken was when I ignored the story and explored Athia instead. Combat and movement are the best parts of the game, allowing Frey to parkour around the world at lightning speed and hurl spells of various elements at the enemies that live there. Running through maps, jumping cliffs, and running around feels great. But if you bring things a little closer, Frey will periodically bounce off walls and short platforms and get cranky. I had to sit there waiting for her to calm down and come back to earth. Also, Parkour is bound to Left Ctrl by default. This is a very inconvenient location for buttons used to traverse the world or dance around enemies. I ended up rebinding it in about 15 hours, my poor wrist buckling under the constant twisting.
Forspoken magic covers the four basic elements of earth, fire, water, and air, putting support and damage-based spells at Frey’s fingertips. Dodging or flipping enemies, shooting giant spiky boulders into their backs, or lifting them into bubbles that, when shot, unfortunately caused nearby allies to unleash a huge area of effect attack. I would have loved to have seen the elements play together and react to each other, but the most frustrating part is not getting the full toolkit until the end of the game.
Now I can hardly blame the game for not coming into its own by the end, and I’ve always defended Final Fantasy 14’s slow start, and I’ve tallied up a lot of JRPGs in my lifetime. would have been so much better if we were able to play 15 hours earlier after 25 hours into the game. You can’t get the last set of spells until just before the final boss. This feels like a huge oversight to me. The way your moves are given to you makes sense in the narrative, but it’s horrible what keeps the game engaging throughout.
nailed it
The enemies are interesting enough, some weak to certain types and magic, and prone to status ailments. When they’re not scattered around the world, they’re a range of Ubisoft-style objective-based pitstops, plunging into some very bland repeatable dungeons and fortresses scattered around the map. These at least offer rewards in the form of cloaks, necklaces, and various nail art that Frey can equip to enhance her health, magic, and defenses. Jump into the instanced area, run down the corridor to the enemy room, and attack the enemy. Rinse and repeat. Fortresses are much the same, simply taking place in the Overworld.

Mutants were my favorite combat in Forspoken. A giant, super-powerful beast scattered across the Overworld. They’re the toughest enemies I’ve faced throughout my playthrough, but they’re also a great way to memorize patterns and develop a habit of honing timing to dodge. When I even understood why.
i had the absolute Mission Attempting to get Forspoken working properly on PC resulted in severe frame drops every time I entered a battle. My biggest drawback is the lack of RAM for the game’s odd system requirements. I chose the standard graphics settings by default, but I rarely got anything above 12 fps while in combat or in a major capital city.
In fact, a good chunk of the early part of my 32-hour playthrough was spent tirelessly tweaking settings. Forspoken’s PC port felt terribly optimized and didn’t improve anything. There are some pretty serious texture rendering issues, which are exacerbated when trying to play at regular 1440p.
Stones blink and disappear, and the door warps behind them as the characters speak. I was regularly dealing with sub-20fps and stuttering, which made me nauseous at the start of my playthrough. It really wasted my early time in the game, especially when the combat was so heavily impacted, in the end I gave up on making his Forspoken look good and put all my energy into making it play better I had to do my best. That’s why my screenshot here looks like an ass.
cat’s energy
There may have been more that were abandoned. I wish Luminous Productions had taken notes from their other game, Final Fantasy 15, and created fewer but more elaborate dungeons for me to explore. Instead, much of the gameplay feels like a general purpose collection. If you’re not preoccupied with picking up new gear between story objectives A and B, grab stat boosts in monuments or quickly explore derelict buildings to clear out enemies. , a new nugget of lore for my archive. If you go occasionally TRUE I was able to find some spells locked behind specific objective markers around the map to keep them out of the way.
The only filler purpose I really enjoyed was the cat monument. They don’t offer anything to gameplay, they just exist as companions to restore health and upgrade gear when Frey goes to rest. Next to me is my cat friend Luna. She loves fur babies that look a little weird, all with their own little fantastical twist. In particular, her one black cat, adorned with gold bangles and horns, stole my heart. The only part of Forspoken’s story that struck a chord with me was also centered around cats, and I welcome their inclusion.

The biggest mistake I made with Forspoken was doing a lot of exploration early on. If you’re going to play it, and it’s a game I think is worth picking up on sale…and possibly on console depending on your rig. I will visit when I can use it freely. One or he banged two spells for hours, and I lamented how painfully basic the combat was. I think my time at Forspoken would have been more enjoyable if I had been handed more elements before, or simply ignored side tasks in favor of accessing them.
The game is most fun when you don’t follow orders. No abrupt stoppages in fade-to-black cutscenes, or the game randomly being in place when you’re starting dialogue that could easily happen while you’re on the move. Once I let go of that limp narrative shackles, I felt like I was finally playing the game Forspoken was meant to be. I can not do it. But hey, it certainly helps.
The game doesn’t have to end to feel like it just started. Unfortunately for Forspoken, that’s exactly what happened.
