Groundhog Day: Punxsutawney Phil is terrible at weather predictions

It’s Groundhog Day! A strange little annual tradition in which Americans and Canadians predict the weather by looking at little shaggy woodchucks.

There’s no real harm in our silly Groundhog Day tradition (unless it’s 2014 and you’re Chuck Staten Island, of course). meeting(opens in new window) It’s amazing how wrong Punxsutawney Phil, the most famous groundhog of the day, was in his predictions over the years, according to then-New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

First, a quick overview of the rules for Groundhog Day. If Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow when he first emerges from his burrow, he is additionally given six weeks of winter. If he doesn’t, we’re headed for early spring.

So Phil has two options. You have a 50% chance of guessing correctly. However, his record of accurately predicting the weather was abysmal. Better to take the exact opposite of Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction.

Phil has been doing this since 1887 (he’s old, by the way). As of 2023, Phil has 137 predictions. Unfortunately, nine of his predictions have been lost to history. But this means that here he has to confirm 128 predictions. Phil looked at his shadow and predicted another six weeks of winter for him a total of 108 times. He has predicted early spring only 20 times.
