Next month, the husband and wife team will embark on an epic electric journey from the magnetic North Pole to the South Pole in a special Nissan Ariya electric SUV specially equipped for adventure.
This isn’t the first time we’ve met Chris and Julie Ramsey. In 2017, he showcased the Nissan Leaf’s all-terrain modification before successfully completing the 17,000 km (10,500 mi) Mongolian rally. Now behind the wheel of an electric Nissan car, this time Arya, he is about to embark on a 27,000 km (over 16,700 miles) journey from north to south of the planet.
Polar expedition specialist Arctic Trucks has partnered with Nissan to prepare an electric SUV for epic adventures, but the battery and powertrain remain unchanged.
Not specified in press material, but assuming 290 kW and 87 kWh AWD versions with 600 Nm (442 lb.ft) of torque and e-4ORCE all-wheel control technology, range per charge up to 475 km (295 miles). Temperatures that are likely to occur are -30 to +30 °C (-22 – 86 °F), so the actual range numbers may vary slightly.
The vehicle will tow a prototype trailer equipped with lightweight wind turbines and solar panels to help meet some of the charging needs along the route.
Nissan
Modifications to the vehicle are reported to be minimal. “One of the things that underpins every adventure we do is take a standard production EV and modify it minimally to clearly demonstrate its real day-to-day functionality, no matter where you drive it. ,” said Chris Ramsey. “Our Nissan Ariya is no exception, as the vehicle’s drivetrain and battery remain factory standard, demonstrating how capable and versatile the Ariyas produced are.
“We changed the suspension and widened the wheel arches so we can benefit from a stable platform and the support of the 39” BF Goodrich tires. Very excited to get behind the wheel of this already great car. But I feel ready to venture to the ends of the earth in style!” Other notable additions include a built-in espresso machine, a weather station, and a drone that can be launched from the roof.
expedition for the first time Any Vehicles were driven from pole to pole. Expected to take about 10 months to complete, it aims not only to showcase EV technology and capabilities, but also to highlight the challenges we face as a result of climate change.
The Ramsay Islands are scheduled to depart in March, crossing 14 countries from the North Arctic to Canada, through the United States and South America, and on to Antarctica. His second unmodified Ariya e-4FORCE serves as a support vehicle for the journey across the Americas.
