Nitecore has long packed incredible lumens into tiny flashlight bodies, but their latest torch does it in a completely different form factor. The new EDC27 looks more like a TV remote than a flashlight thanks to its ultra-thin rectangular body built to fit easily in your pants, shirt or jacket pocket. When taken out of your pocket and pointed forward, the EDC27 projects up to 3,000 lumens of light up to 720 feet (220 m) away, illuminating ominous pitch darkness into something more familiar and recognizable.
Nitecore has a number of regular cylindrical torches in its large flashlight family, but the company has never stuck to a single style. Designs such as a cylindrical head on the handle and a small boxy keychain torch were introduced. But the EDC27 really stands out, combining the sleek carbon fiber construction found in his Nitecore ultraportable battery charger with powerful LED technology to create a striking effect.
In numbers, the EDC27 is just over 0.56 inches (14.2 mm) thick. Nitecore claims it’s 44% slimmer than typical compact flashlights, which are about 1 inch (25 mm) in diameter. The EDC27’s slim package means no shortage of light or run time, as the torch features six modes ranging from 15 to 3,000 lumens. Apart from turbo and strobe modes with a very low runtime of 3,000 lumens, Nitecore doesn’t mention anything, and apart from an ultra-low 15 lumens/37 hours mode, the flashlight maxes out at a low mode of 65 lumens. 11 hours, 3 hours 45 minutes mode at 200 lumens, and 1 hour 45 minutes high mode at 1,000 lumens.
EDC27 displays information clearly on a small OLED screen. Readouts include brightness level, remaining battery runtime, and voltage. Two lockout modes prevent the user from accidentally turning on the torch and draining his 1,700 mAh lithium-ion battery.
