China already has quite a few great airports, some shaped like giant starfish, others like snowflakes, but now it’s ready to accept another. MAD Architects has unveiled plans for a massive new floating terminal in the northeastern city of Changchun.

When fully operational, it will accommodate 22 million passengers per year and will connect to the existing nearby high-speed rail system. The idea behind the unseen form or It looks like a feather to our eyes, but what is certainly impressive is providing a calming experience for weary travelers.
“The terminal building was designed to add a human-scale space to the airport that has a calming presence, both from a distance and from within,” explained MAD. “As visitors approach from the high-speed rail ‘Longjia’ station or from the parking lot, they are greeted by the terminal’s unique fan-shaped profile resembling a floating feather. “By adopting a three-fingered corridor structure surrounded by arcs, the terminal will be able to keep passenger seats close to the aircraft while maintaining an overall harmonious layout in connection to the T1 and T2 terminal areas. Increase the number of passengers encountering large entrances, uninterrupted ground floors that provide direct access to subways, motorways, and other modes of transportation that connect the terminal to the larger site.
gone crazy
The airport’s design is also inspired by Changchun’s status as one of China’s greenest ‘garden cities’, covering 438 acres (177.6 hectares) of land with landscaping that includes forests, lakes and meadows. are placed in the compartments of , undulating terrain.
The interior isn’t as lush as Singapore’s Jewel Changi Airport, but MAD calls it a ‘garden airport’ and will be filled with plants, trees and water features. Natural light is also a key focal point, with skylights in its striking timber ceilings.
Changchun Airport Terminal 3 was selected in an international architectural competition and is being built jointly with the China Airport Planning and Design Institute and the Beijing Architectural Design Company. No word yet on when it will be completed.
