AI has been a big buzzword for quite a few years now, but things are picking up steam these days as AI chatbots grow in popularity. ChatGPT is the latest craze and the AI technology behind this tool is now powering Microsoft Bing.
The tech giant is working with OpenAI to integrate the latest AI technology into Bing and Edge to challenge Google. The update is already available in preview for some users to try, including Bing’s new chat UI. However, given the popularity of Google Search, I’d like to know if these changes are enough to convince you to switch to Bing, or stick with your search engine of choice.
The new Bing has four components that take advantage of this impressive new AI technology. Search has been enhanced to provide users with more relevant answers to their queries. In addition, query responses now display a comprehensive overview of the generated results in the side panel. This way you don’t have to keep scrolling to find what you need.
Of course, ChatGPT powers the new Bing so users can chat with the service to get more targeted answers. Microsoft says it’s useful for things like travel planning, and accepts up to 1,000 characters while taking into account the context of the conversation. It’s also how users use the new Bing to spark their creativity, and they can also use Bing to compose emails about what they want, in the style they want.
Microsoft says the technology behind it is “more powerful” than ChatGPT and provides up-to-date information.
Of course, Google announced just one day before Microsoft’s announcement that it was working on a similar service called Bard. Google’s version is built on a minified version of LaMDA and is currently being tested by a small number of people.
But as our Jerry Hildenbrand points out, Google seems to rush the announcement to get ahead of Microsoft, and employees aren’t happy. On the other hand, Microsoft seems to be pondering this and could benefit a lot from the enhancements made to Bing. That said, Google Search is still the powerful tool that people know and love, and we keep improving our tools behind the scenes to keep it that way.
