Happy New Year from CineD! 2022 has been quite the year for CineD. Aside from some thoughts on what’s behind us, let’s take a closer look at some notable stats and take a quick look at what 2023 has in store!
2022 has come to an end. It’s time to take a step back and reflect on everything that happened with the industry as a whole, and his CineD in particular. Also, we’re just getting started, so I’m excited to share with you some of our biggest plans for next year.
But let’s start with a quick recap of what happened across the filmmaking tech industry.
Filmmaking Tech in 2022: Disrupted Supply Chains and Products Disrupting the Industry?
As for our filmmaking tech industry, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and ensuing factory closures, the supply chain for many of the components and materials needed to build the electronics we love has experienced unprecedented disruption. it was done. Simply put, getting the cameras/lenses/lights in a reasonable amount of time was much more difficult. of manufacturers were prevented from introducing their products.
Innovation in mid-range cameras…
In terms of camera innovation, it’s fair to say that it hasn’t been a revolutionary year for mid-range cameras in the mirrorless category, but the cameras have seen many improvements (better AF, better codecs, smaller form factors , etc.) were observed. FUJIFILM X-H2 (Mirrorless Camera of the Year), X-H2S, Canon EOS R5 C, Sony FX30, recent Nikon Z 9 update and more. In general, the market is threatened by the constant advancement of filmmaking on mobile phones. (When was the last time you saw a bunch of tourists with cameras instead of phones?) It’s also been shrinking over the years.

…and a giant leap in high-end cinema.
However, when it comes to high-end cameras, we have seen the arrival of the ARRI ALEXA 35. It beats the competition in dynamic range and latitude in industry-acclaimed lab tests. An all-new sensor (ARRI’s first new sensor in over 12 years) delivers results that promise to define the top tier of cinema cameras for years to come. Perfect timing for ARRI. The mid-range market is probably shrinking, but the high-end market for cameras is booming thanks to a production boom in which many streaming services compete for headlines and subscription dollars (and top talent). ).

CineD in 2022: Database of Cameras and Lenses Launched, More Reviews and Education Than Ever
While the pandemic didn’t end earlier this year, we will continue to invest heavily in new features and content while working with the best talent to become the ultimate online “Swiss Army knife for filmmakers.” strengthened its efforts.

CineD Camera & Lens Database
In August, we finally launched the CineD database after many years of development. As the ultimate resource for validated, comparable information on camera performance, we’ve added the results of our acclaimed lab tests (dynamic range, latitude, rolling shutter results), as well as a complete list of recording modes and more. I wanted to combine it with the camera data from Time for all cameras tested. Additionally, the Lens Database and Lens Coverage tools combine data from the Camera Database and the Lens Database.
Based on the feedback we’ve received, we’ve achieved our goal of being the ultimate resource for camera technical information. An email from Larry Sher, ASC, and the cinematographer (Joker, Hangover, and many others) said: This is something I’ve wanted to be in one place for a long time, and you’ve made it happen. It’s exactly this kind of feedback that keeps us going and makes us strive to give back to the community even more!
Databases are revolutionary. This is something I wanted to be in one place for a long time and you nailed it.

The return of trade fairs – and the return of CineD video coverage
In 2022, the industry trade fair will be held again. It was smaller, but generally received great feedback. All involved realized what was missing in the last few years when these events could not take place. It’s not really about gear, it’s about personal interaction with colleagues and makers in a relaxed atmosphere. And just like before, we started traveling the world again to cover the shows: BSC Expo in London, NAB in Las Vegas, Cineggia in Los Angeles, his IBC in Amsterdam, InterBEE in Tokyo… the world is I’m back in that trade show circus. time. We shot dozens of trade show videos and featured many new products.

We are also very proud to host our first trade show booth of the year at the IBC in Amsterdam in September. We’ve been covering his trade shows since 2008, and in that time his CineD has grown so much that apart from our ubiquity covering new products at other brand booths, the show I needed to make a presence on the floor. Our awesome audience members promote MZed filmmaking education products, give away giveaways, and talk to our advertising clients.
We also pledged to have a booth at NAB in Las Vegas in April 2023, simply because our experience at IBC was so great. But when you meet us in Las Vegas, you can be sure that your trip to Las Vegas will be worth it.
Importance of original video content for CineD
Unlike other sites covering the industry, we believe it is essential to create as much original video content as possible for our audience. After all, filmmaking is our profession, so we need to do our best to produce as many videos as possible for an audience that is exactly that expert. That’s why it’s a top priority for the CineD team. High-quality, unbiased reviews of filmmaking techniques, relevant industry discussions with thought leaders, and coverage of new and innovative products. Produced and published 150 videos in 2022 on our YouTube channel. In 2023, he will work even harder to come up with new formats and perfect what he does on YouTube to reach an even wider audience and further connect the website with his YouTube audience.
Most of the 48 reviews we published in 2022 were video reviews in addition to the written part. Our reviews take most of our time, but we promise to test all relevant cameras with video reviews. A video review takes the camera out and puts it in a realistic situation. In addition to camera reviews, we also reviewed accessories this year.

CineD Written Content
But of course, written content is still at the heart of CineD.com, so we’re focusing on that area as well. In 2022, the English version of him wrote 957 articles on the international version of CineD, 778 articles on the Japanese version of the site, and 473 articles on the Spanish version of the site. I cannot thank the editorial team enough for their enormous efforts. CineD does a lot, but relies on the work and experience of several highly dedicated professionals spread around the world (headquartered in Vienna, Austria). If you’re interested in joining our ever-growing editorial team, take a look at our current vacancies for new writers and editor-in-chief. We will reply to all applicants in January.
More Important Than Gear: Filmmaking Education To Develop Skills
In 2021, we invested in filmmaking education by acquiring MZed, a leading platform for online filmmaking courses. We truly believe that next to practicing your craft, only the best filmmaking education can make you a better filmmaker. Yes, new gear, new cameras with modern accessories can give you better visual results if you know how to use them, but the art of filmmaking itself – cinematography, directing, producing, etc. cannot replace experience and knowledge of , editing, etc.

2023: CineD introduces more educational courses than ever
That is why we have decided to work fully with MZed, adding 10 completely new courses and hundreds of new course lessons in 2022 alone. Most of them were created or commissioned by us. We’ve used CineD’s connections with some of the world’s best filmmakers and world-famous manufacturers to help shape some of the greatest courses ever. Just a few days ago, an absolute time-lapse master (famous “House of Cards” intro and many, many, many more). In the coming weeks, a new course by Alister Chapman will show you exactly how the Cine EI mode on Sony FX cameras works on Wildlife with his filmmaking course and another lighting by ASC’s Paul Atkins and his ASC’s Steven Wrighthill. courses are available.
Packed with Benefits for Every Serious Filmmaker
Our idea is to stuff MZed Pro’s annual membership with as much valuable content as possible for professional filmmakers and creators. 30GB lifetime storage on pCloud).
Coming 2023: A Weekly Podcast on Filmmaking Techniques
Podcasts are all the rage again, and we’ve been thinking about doing this for a while, and in early 2023 we’ll be launching all the podcasts we covered last week on a regular basis, possibly weekly. The “regular ramblings” of Johnnie Behiri and myself, and sometimes other team members and guests, about our products, our latest reviews, and our thoughts on what’s going on. The podcast, which has yet to be named, will be featured on all relevant podcast services as an audio his podcast (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc.) and may also be featured in video format on our YouTube channel. More details and an exact release date will be revealed in the coming weeks!
