1961 Bentley S2 Continental becomes rarest of retro-electrified cars

Since its inception in 2018, British company Lunaz Design has been transforming classic cars into truly stunning all-electric creations. This month, the company actually surpassed itself by announcing the most unusual electric-converted car ever. The coach-bodied 1961 Bentley S2 Continental at the heart of the modification is his one of the few cars ever built. Lunaz replaces his classic aluminum alloy 6.2-liter V8 engine with the latest in his 400-horsepower electric drive, making it truly one-of-a-kind.

Bentley built nearly 2,000 S2s between 1959 and 1962. At the time, it was still possible to combine rolling chassis with special body coaches built by seasoned professionals such as HJ Mulliner & Co. and Park Ward. This particular example is fitted with a two-door his-body coach built by James Young on top of his S2 chassis of the rarer Continental spec, which Lunaz has never built. We define it as just one of four similar examples.

As Lunaz details, after the first commissioning in 1961, the S2 Continental was sold in 1967. This S2 Continental of his changed owners several times, traveling through Germany and Japan before finally finding its way back to the UK.

Somewhere in the history of Continental-spec cars, the James Young two-door body still exists in 2023. And the British electric upfitter turned the original V8 powertrain from few to one by replacing it with modular electrical hardware that was individually specified for each car to breathe new life into it. I’m here. In this case the electric drive puts out 400 bhp and 530 lb-ft (298 kW and 719 Nm).

The newly modernized Bentley can sprint from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.9 seconds, and the Lunaz is fitted with state-of-the-art adjustable coil-spring suspension, so the first flick of the steering wheel will make your body sprint. No wobble. That of a half-sedated elephant. Drivers can electronically adjust the suspension system from the cockpit. The company also adds regenerative braking, along with six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers.

Lunaz’s process also includes stripping the car to raw metal, repairing the body to the smallest, most obscure imperfections, and refinishing it in the client’s chosen color. Interiors are treated in much the same way, with the Lunaz team working with clients to identify the right combination of upholstery, trim and color. The interior of this Bentley has a strong focus on sustainability, with materials such as FSC-certified sustainable wood veneers and carpets made from recycled nylon and recycled plastic.

Luna’s hasn’t specified a price for this particular electromod, but given the rare and unique air that clings to it, it’s only relevant to clients who ultimately get it delivered from the company’s Silverstone production facility. Previous Lunaz electric creations we’ve seen started at a cool £350,000 (about US$421,550).
