Last year, Sony AI and Polyphony Digital grand touring, developed a new AI agent capable of racing at a world-class level. At the time, this experiment was described in a paper in Nature, where researchers showed that this AI could drive very fast, something other AIs have done in the past.
At the time, the AI’s name, GT Sophy, was not yet ready for its heyday. For example, I often overtook opponents at the earliest opportunity on the straight and was able to overtake them in the next braking zone. And unlike human players, GT Sophy will try to overtake the player in imminent time his penalty.
But in the meantime, Sony AI and Polyphony Digital are working on GT Sophy, and tomorrow (Feb 21), GT Sophy will be Gran Turismo 7 At least for a limited time as part of update 1.29. Through the end of March, players can test their skills against Sophie in a series of races of increasing difficulty in his GT Sophie Race Together mode. There’s even a one-on-one match where you compete with Sophie in the same car, so you can see how much slower you are than the AI.

“This evolution of AI is an iconic moment in the 25-year history of Gran Turismo, and is as important as the evolution of car physics simulation, which is at the heart and core of racing games: Polyphony Digital.
“Unlike conventional built-in AI, GT Sophy drives continuously in various situations, allowing you to experience the excitement of close-quarters combat as if you were competing against a professional racing driver. Since then, we’ve continued to evolve GT Sophy and bring our concept of “Race Together” to life, envisioning providing a fun opponent for players to compete against and learn from.
This version of Sophie is timed in-game, but it won’t be the last time we see AI. Sony says it will collect feedback on this first feature and use it to improve the AI in future updates.
I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to seeing how badly educated I am.
