Modeling studies show that well-placed mangrove forests can help protect coastal areas from rising water levels during tropical storms.
Mangroves include trees that grow primarily in saltwater coastlines in tropical and subtropical regions. In many parts of the world they were destroyed to make way for fish farming. However, they are important carbon sinks and their restoration is seen as a promising way to mitigate climate change.
