Honor unveils the first silicon-carbon battery with 12.8% higher energy density

Chipsets, displays, cameras, etc., most smartphone technologies are advancing rapidly. All except battery capacity, which increases at a snail’s pace. Honor believes it has found the industry’s first silicon-carbon battery solution.

It promises a 12.8% higher energy density compared to current lithium batteries that use graphite in one of the electrodes (anode). More specifically, the Honor Magic5 Pro has a standard 5,100mAh battery.

CEO George Zhao briefly explained on stage, showing a few graphs that briefly explain why the new battery is better. A standard lithium battery doesn’t have much power left when the voltage drops to he 3.5 volts. That’s where Silicon Carbon shines, as he has 240% more capacity left at 3.5V than a standard battery. This brings him to 12.8% overall.improvement

Interestingly, the Chinese Magic5 Pro is listed as having a 5,450mAh battery. It looks like the new battery technology is already a reality rather than something that has been tested in the lab. However, the international model will launch with a standard 5,100mAh battery, so we’ll try to confirm with Honor if the Chinese unit really has a silicon carbon battery.
