My passion for parenting peaked at the age of 4 when I was cast in the lead role at my school’s Christmas party. I used to take her responsibilities as Mary very seriously, but during the big night’s high-tempo carols, I dropped baby Jesus on my head. I was never given a named portion again.

I don’t know how many young girls play with dolls. Because they love babies, or simply because society says they should. But I know that as a kid, I wasn’t interested. Had baby Jesus been a plastic dinosaur or an astronaut, I might have stayed focused. However, I didn’t grow up with a strong desire to be a parent, but it’s an issue that comes to mind more and more. I’m old. These life events are accompanied by social expectations and pressures. But I don’t know what I want.

I’m not alone In the UK, 38% of people between the ages of 25 and 34 are unsure whether they want children or don’t want children now but someday. Birth rates around the world are plummeting, and many people with children regret it. To avoid such things, I want to put aside my emotional baggage and cultural expectations and see if a cold, hard fact can steer me in the right direction.
