Satellite TV company Dish Network has revealed that ransomware was responsible for several days of outages affecting customers.
The Colorado-based company, which also owns wireless service provider Boost Mobile and streaming provider Sling, revealed the news in an SEC filing yesterday.
The 8-K form noted that Dish Network “experienced a network outage affecting internal servers and IT telephony” on February 23.
“The company immediately initiated incident response and business continuity plans designed to contain, assess and remediate the situation,” he continued. “The services of cybersecurity experts and external advisors were maintained to assist in assessing the situation. The company determined that the outage was due to a cybersecurity incident and notified appropriate law enforcement agencies. bottom.”
Additionally, in its filings, the company more explicitly cites a “ransomware attack” as the culprit.
For the customer, further trouble may lie ahead.
“On February 27, 2023, the company became aware that certain data had been extracted from the company’s IT systems as part of this incident. It may become clear,” he said.
“The above measures continue while the company investigates the extent of the cybersecurity incident with the help of third-party experts and advisors.”
The incident brought down both the Dish and Boost Mobile websites and support lines. Boost Mobile users were also reportedly told they might have problems paying their bills.
Currently, the notice on Dish Network’s website does not mention ransomware or cyberattacks, saying, “There is a system issue that our team is working hard to resolve.” is written only.
Dish acknowledged the issue in its regulatory filings.
“Dish, Sling, and wireless and data networks remain operational. However, corporate internal communications, customer call centers, and Internet sites are affected,” it said. “The company is actively working to restore affected systems and is making steady progress.”
