Google extended the client side encryption (CSE) Support for additional products in the Workspace suite. Security features were already available in Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Meet. The company announced Tuesday that CSE is now also supported in his Gmail and Calendar.
In a blog post by Ganesh Chilakapati, Group Product Manager of Andy, Google said: Wen, Director of Product Management for Google Workspace Security, said:
The move will ease compliance procedures for private and public sector organizations, according to the company, given that certain types of communications require high levels of encryption.
“Regulatory requirements to separate an organization’s data from the cloud provider’s environment have created an important use case for client-side encryption.” Written by Chila Kapati and Wen.
These range from keeping sensitive R&D data private to scenarios where confidentiality is key to the success of mission-critical operations.
“Starting today, users will know that sensitive data (including inline images and attachments) is encrypted before it reaches Google servers when sending and receiving emails, communicating with colleagues within the company or outside the company. You can create meeting events with people.”
From a technical standpoint, Gmail and Calendar on Workspace already support data encryption at rest and in transit using secure-designed encryption libraries.
“Client-side encryption requires this […] By giving customers sole control over their encryption keys, we take our capabilities to the next level and give them complete control over all access to their data,” reads the blog post.
Client-side encryption for Gmail, Calendar, and more is available to customers worldwide with Workspace Enterprise Plus, Education Standard, and Education Plus subscriptions.
