Microsoft is a big proponent of OpenAI’s ChatGPT product, which is already embedded in Bing and Edge as well as Skype. With the latest Windows 11 updates, ChatGPT also appears in the OS taskbar search box. This is just the beginning. OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT and Whisper are available to developers through APIs.
After some major optimizations, the cost of using ChatGPT is now 90% cheaper than in December. This means that the gtp-3.5-turbo model (which powers the ChatGPT we used) costs $0.002 per 1,000 tokens. In other words, for $1 you get 500K tokens (ChatGPT doesn’t work with single letters, tokens are like vowels).
This new price will significantly reduce the cost for businesses to build their own chatbots. But ChatGPT works with text. What if a company wants a bot to respond to voice commands?Here comes Whisper. This model can transcribe speech to text at a cost of $0.006 per minute (or $1 for 2 hours and 45 minutes).
Whisper can not only understand 99 languages, but it can also translate what you say into English. This is likely to confuse Siri and the Google Assistant, which can only handle a handful of languages.
Businesses can use OpenAI’s APIs to build new chat bots, and some have already done so. Microsoft is not alone. Here are some examples:
Snapchat introduced My AI to Snapchat+ this week. This bot can provide recommendations such as dinner recipes or planning hiking trips. You can also ask them to write a haiku for you.
Instacart has also launched a ChatGPT-based bot that can help customers by suggesting recipes and automatically building shopping lists they need.
Similarly, Shopify’s Shop app helps users navigate products and brands and make purchases as if they had a personal shopping assistant.
ChatGPT has also been adopted by learning apps. Quizlet introduces Q-Chat, a “fully adaptive AI tutor”. This is more flexible than a fixed textbook quiz that has to accommodate every student, and this adapts to your needs.
Speak, the fastest growing English app in South Korea, introduces Wishper to help locals learn to speak the language. Speak is also expanding into new markets.
