When Mark Necaise ran out of his last four floppy disks at the Mississippi Rodeo in February, he started to worry.

At the time Necaise’s Tajima machines were manufactured, floppy disks were still mass-produced and were particularly popular in Japan, where until last year they were used for official government procedures. The last major manufacturer of floppy disks stopped making floppy disks in 2010, but the machines that rely on floppy disks (from embroidery machines to plastic molding, from medical devices to aircraft) are running out of disks that will eventually run out. Depends on dwindling supplies to stay alive. .

There are fewer than 20 Boeing 747-200s in operation worldwide today and they are used only for cargo or military purposes. Several other types of commercial aircraft also use floppy disks, including newer variations of the 747 and 767, older Airbus A320s, and some business jets such as the Gulfstream built up to the 1990s.
