Feiyu does away with the cord for Pocket 3 modular wireless actioncam

Last year, I reviewed the Feiyu Pocket 2S, an action cam with a hardwired and detachable gimbal camera head. Well, Feiyu has stepped up its game with the fully wireless Pocket 3. This seems to make shooting on the go much easier.

In summary, the Feiyu Pocket 2S (still available) consists of a handle that contains the LCD viewfinder screen and all the controls, and a gimbal-mounted camera module that attaches magnetically to the top of that handle. The two units are connected by a 3-foot (0.9 m) long electrical cord.

Users can snap the two units together to shoot, just like the rival integrated DJI Osmo Pocket camera, or detach the camera module and stick it on a bike helmet, car roof, or something that no longer exists. You can also Over 3 feet apart.

Needless to say, that code limits the possible applications of the setup, plus (as we’ve found ourselves) gets in the way, risks catching things, and never rolls back cleanly like the original. . The camera left the factory first. That’s where the Pocket 3 comes in…

Once detached, the 3-axis gimbal camera module communicates wirelessly with the handle via Wi-Fi, completely cordless. And yes, the two units are still magnetically connected and can be used as one piece.

The camera has a maximum video resolution of 4K/30fps and can capture 12-megapixel still images. It also has a Sony 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor, a 130-degree wide-angle lens, and the ability to shoot slow-motion footage up to 8x at 720p. Users can further configure the gimbal to automatically track faces, track objects (such as themselves), and take time-lapse videos.

Footage is stored on a user-provided microSD card that goes into the camera module. This means that faults that occur in wireless transmission are not recorded. When shooting at 1080p/30fps, charging the 750 mAh battery in the handle and the 280 mAh battery in the camera module for 1.5 hours provides 116 minutes when the two are directly connected, or 60 minutes when they are directly connected is reported. Isolate and use Wi-Fi.

The Pocket 3's camera module includes its own battery and microSD card slot, so it's larger and heavier than the Pocket 2S's camera module. The total weight of the entire Pocket 3 setup is 159 g (5.6 oz).

For more control over settings and an easier interface, users can also control the camera via an iOS/Android app on their Wi-Fi linked smartphone.

The Feiyu Pocket 3 is currently on a Kickstarter campaign, and you can get one with a $199 USD pledge. Planned retail price is $300.
