Last month Google released the first Developer Preview of Android 14 and today the company released the second Developer Preview. The new release further enhances privacy, security and performance to continue improving the experience on tablets and foldables.
Following this Developer Preview, the first beta will be released in April, followed by three more within the next three months, according to Google’s official timeline.
Android 14 Developer Preview 2 includes built-in support for allowing apps to access only selected photos and videos, all of them, or none at all. A new dialog for this is shown below.
In Android 14, Credential Manager is a platform API that allows apps to sign in using passkeys. The second DP improves his UI style in the account selector and changes the API based on feedback to DP1.
Apps targeting Android 14 (which will be a very small subset initially) need to be granted permission to start activities in the background.
DP2 optimizes Android’s memory management system to improve resource usage while apps are running in the background. Android 14 also has fewer unignorable notifications and improved app store APIs.
With Regional Settings, once your device gets Android 14, you’ll be able to personalize your temperature units, first day of the week, and numbering system based on your region. If you’re a European living in the US, you won’t be stuck with Fahrenheit anymore.
The second Developer Preview, as the name suggests, is only recommended for use by app developers for testing their apps. Consumers will also have easy access when the first beta releases next month. Android 14 Developer Preview 2 can be installed on Pixel 4a 5G and newer Google devices.
